237 Lambs, 223 Draft Ewes and Rams

Smaller entry mostly due to our evening ram sale last Friday which saw several of our regular vendors purchasing rams and going on a six day standstill and also the national trade has dropped back.

On the day our trade was very strong with the good meat lambs selling to 316ppk for a pen of 46.2kgs, £146 from Rod Wood of Forda, Thornbury. 313ppk was realised from 2 vendors Rod Wood for 46kgs £144 and Peter Hobbs of Wrasford 46kgs £144.

P Littlejohns & Son of Morwenstow saw their 41kgs make 312ppk, £128. Top per head on the day was £155 again from Rod Wood.

Draft Ewes

Larger entry with again, a lot of plain ewes on offer and a strong trade met across the board.

A Texel from Mr P Statton of Badgall, Launceston topped the day at £232 followed by £171 for Charollais x from C Bungay of Bradworthy.

Suffolk x ewes to £157 from Rod Wood of Forda Farm, Polled Dorset ewes to £134 from RA Anstey of Iddesleigh. Grazing ewes very much in demand ranging from £85 to £102.

346 Store Lambs

Much larger entry with nearly all lean small framed lambs on offer which met a firm trade with several prospective buyers in attendance and more could have been sold.

Top per head on the day was £107 from 3 vendors, Arthur Vallance of Tavistock for Charollais x, JT Genduso of Bratton Clovelly and a pen of Polled Dorset x from Mrs Weaver of Umberleigh.

520 Calves and Weaned Calves

A huge entry of 520 rearing calves present at Holsworthy this week and trade would have more life about it compared to last week but still nothing too much to shout about.

56 different vendors from all parts of the Westcountry sold to 48 individual buyers from all parts of the country.

Weaned Calves

Very little weaned calves in the ranks with nearly everything forward being in the milk section although we did see a bunch of 5, 4 month old Friesian bulls reach £452 for Wills Bro Ltd, Wadebridge.

Milk Calves

Big numbers present, 520 penned and sold. Overall we’ve had a decent day, with the best no dearer trading between £500-£680, lots of mediums looking well sold at £300-£450 and smalls all finding homes between £50 and £150.

Top of the milk calf section was £680 for a super Charolais bull looking very well sold in from D Philp & Son up from Looe, more Charolais bulls to £575 for LJ Goaman, Hartland and £492 for J Sillifant, Pancrasweek with all averaging £455.

106 Blue bulls average £406 and top at £675 for a screamer in from Dan Chamberlian & Son, Shebbear, other top end sorts to £662 for Messrs Kendall, Bodmin, £660 for PJ Martin, Buckland Filleigh and £650 for Trela Farms Ltd, Camelford with many others over £600.

Some strong Limousin bulls up for grabs and reached £635 for Rachel Skinner, Halwill others to £492 for AS Brenton & Son, St Keyne.

Angus bulls sold very well with 2 cracking Angus bulls reaching £500 for Messrs Kendall, others £485 for Trela Farms Ltd, £430 for Moor View Farm Ltd, £418 for BC & PM Cox, Stoke Climsland and £408 for LJ Goaman & Son.

A huge entry of Herefords which saw solid interest from start to finish, best up to £518 for RC & T Martin, Torrington and £392 for HI Angwin with plenty Hereford bulls over and beyond £300.

Top end Blue heifers made their money at £580 x2 for Messrs Kendall, others £505 for PJ Martin, £490 for PF Cleave, South Youlstone and £482 for Wills Bros Ltd.

Charolais heifers at £470, £450 and £448 all for LJ Goaman and more to £430 J Sillifant and £428 for D Philp & Son.

Sweet Limousin heifers to £500 for AS Brenton, more to £485 for Rachel Skinner followed by strong Herefords to £495 for RC & T Martin, Torrington, a well fleshed Angus heifer to £375 for Trela Farms Ltd, and a pair to £365 for Tim Isaac, Hollacombe.

Young fresh Simmental heifers to £350, £300 and £280 all presented by J Sillifant again. All in all, a decent day’s trading, with big numbers of calves expected next week again.

Dairy Sired Bulls

Plenty on offer with 45 penned and sold to a decent trade to a top of £395 for a older sort in from R Keenor, Lapford with all Friesian bulls averaging well at £108.

205 Store Cattle

Another strong trade this week and several consignments of cattle in tip top condition.

Top call today was £2370 for 2 large dairy x Aberdeen Angus steers from Mr S May of Week St Mary who sold a single suckled Limousin at £2350 & 4 Charolais at £2100.

A 18mth British Blue steer from Mr E Martin of Milton Damerel to £2080, other British Blues from Messrs WJ, JM & MJ Elliot of Bradford £1890 (4).

A nice run of younger 16-17mth wintering single sucked Herefords & Simmentals from MR C Durston of Germansweek sold well at £1970 & £1930, other Hereford steers from Mr M Heale of Holsworthy to £1910.

A cracking run of British Friesian steers 24mths from Messrs NC & RM Skinner of Halwill to £1850, others to £1790 with plenty of other 17mth wintering types to £1700 & top of the heifers was £2090 for a 28mth Hereford from Mr PM Piper of Bradford, other Hereford heifers 18mths from Messrs WJ, JM & MJ Elliot at £1800.

Large Holstein heifers to £1910 from Mr MW Brown of Torrington, Limousin heifers to £1730 for 2 from Mr G Daniel & Son of North Tamerton, 4 cracking young 14mth pure bred Limousins from Mr PW Endacott of Halwill to £1720.

Several good feeding British Blue heifers to £1730 from Mr J Angell (Foxcombe Farm Somerset Ltd), other British Blues from Messrs DG & AM Gerry of Ashwater to £1650.

Aberdeen Angus to £1710 for 2 at 22mth from Messrs G Daniel & Son. More wintering 15-18mth heifers required.

Younger Stores

Numbers tighter this week, a cracking entry of 40 6-8mth indoor Continental & Natives from Mr J Angell of Foxcombe Farm Somerset Ltd saw Hereford steers to £1080, others £1030, Aberdeen Angus steers £1080, others at £1060 & British Blue heifers to £980.

Stronger 10-12mth British Blues from Messrs R Wood & Partners of Forda sold well, 6 at £1400 & 8 at £1360, other 12mth British Blues from Messrs CR & CF Timms & Son of Okehampton to £1200 whose Charolais steers were £1200 & Hereford steers £1190, Hereford heifers to £1060.

Grazing Cows

A young spirited Simmental cow from Mr S Stevens of Alverdiscott topped this week at £1200.

OTM Weighing Cows

3 of the best cows f rom Mr ME Elderfield seen at Holsworthy Market for a long time topping at 299p for a 848 kilo Limousin who also topped the day at £2583 for a 870 kilo Charolais 297p.

35 Dairy Cattle

A smaller entry of dairy cattle saw a much easier trade than recent weeks with cattle looking good value.

Top call of the day was £2400 for a freshly calved 3rd calving cow ‘Mudgeon Imagine Buttercup 180’ yielding 39Kgs on behalf of WP & J Jenkin Ltd of Helston. The Jenkin Family also sold a June calved 2nd calving cow ‘Mudgeon Prince Daisy 94 GP83’ at £2100.

Messrs TRD Griffin & Son of Whitstone sold a fresh heifer at £2250 with Mr P Cleave of Bude realising £2200 for his fresh heifer.

British Friesian X In Calf Heifers also saw a steadier trade topping at £1350 (X2) for heifers due November onwards on behalf of A Pearce & N Sanders of St Neot with others selling to £1300.

British Friesian X Bulling Heifers topped at £680 from the same vendor.
