548 Prime Sheep, 180 Draft and Rams

The hoggs just keep on coming and the trade was similar to last week. The well fleshed hoggs to 319ppk from two vendors Derek Gerry, Ashwater 45kgs £143.50 and Rob Johns, Bradworthy 36kgs £115.

Terry O’Reilly, Halwill had two pens of 40kgs at 315ppk £126. Top per head on the day was £170 for heavies from Alec Vanstone, Shebbear followed by Mark Wooldridge, Okehampton who realised £165 for his first pen of heavies.

Draft Ewes

As last week all ewes met a flying trade and again a lot more could have been sold. Suffolk x ewes to £208 from MJ Ashton, Parkham.

Charollais x ewes to £207 from Geoff May, Instow. Max Allin, Launcells saw his Texel x ewes to £205. Polled Dorset ewes to £199 from Helen Cole, Langtree Week. Mules to £190 and Scotch Black Face ewes to £158 from Mr WG Heal, Bratton Fleming.

157 Store Lamb

More on offer met a steady trade with the tight skinned lambs selling to a premium. Top on the day was 357ppk for a pen of 42kgs £150 from Sam Vickery, Kilkhampton.

James Fishleigh, Newton St Petrock realised 350ppk for his 44kgs £154. Top on the day was £157 for 46kgs from Geoffrey & Simon Grigg, Bideford.

Couples 74E and 106L

Larger entry and a very fast trade. Doubles to £350 from Danny Norman, Dolton. Mule hogg Singles to £278 from Henry Banbury, Iddesleigh. Suffolk x Singles to £255 from Dan Jeffery, Hartland.

342 Calves

Spring calves are slowly drying up but still a reasonable number which sold to a ring full of both farmer and trading buyers. A trade we have never seen in Holsworthy before but seems the new norm, with some calves travelling over 95 miles to enjoy Holsworthy’s trade.

Weaned Calves

A decent show on offer which sold to an excellent trade yet again reaching £940 (7mths) for some South Devon x steers in from James Williams, Yelverton, followed by British Blue bulls to £720 (6mths) in from MJ Taylor, Ilfracombe and more to £700 (4mths) sold by Dec Smale, Bideford.

Hereford steers to £700 for Peter Warrington with others to £650 for MJ Taylor again. Angus steers to £700 for Chirs Hall down from Blandford. British Blue heifers sold well to £710 (6mths) for MJ Taylor and £670 for Dec Smale again. Limousin heifers to £660 for MJ Taylor who sold Hereford to £630.

Milk Calves

An unbelievable trade for rearing calves with a new top record price of £870 given for a tremendous British Blue bull in from Nick and Kate Bowden, Highampton who sold others to £760 and £670 up next was £820 for another British Blue bull in from Angus Heyward, Coryton with others to £810 RWH Dilling, Highampton, £760 AW Pomeroy & Son, West Putford and £650 for Peter Denton, Lostwithiel.

2 Phenomenal Charolais bulls to £780 for the Wearing Family, Tavistock followed by Aberdeen Angus bulls reached a grand £700 for Chris Budge, St Giles with 27 Aberdeen Angus bulls averaging £487. Hereford bulls to £680 and £580 (x2) in from Peter Warrington, Pyworthy. Smart Limousin bulls to £650 for Chris Budge, St Giles more to £540 for B & N Davey Partnership, Boyton.

Heifers sold to a new record of £700 for a phenomenal British Blue heifer in from RWH Dilling again, others to £680 Peter Denton and £660, £645 for John Cann, Highampton with 10 other British Blue heifers over £600. A single suckled Limousin heifer to £690 for Geoff Endacott with others to £665 for Chris Budge and younger types to £505 for B & N Davey, Boyton, all Limousin heifers averaged £500.

Reared Aberdeen Angus heifers to £600 for Pether Warrington, with others to £575 (x3) for Chris Budge and 34 Aberdeen Angus heifers averaging just shy of £400 which must be another record. Charolais heifers to £575 and £555 for Nick and Kate Bowden, followed by Hereford heifers to £500 for RWH Dilling.

Dairy Sired Bulls

Only a handful of Friesians on offer which averaged £163 to a top of £360 for a part reared type in from Chris Budge others to £190 for Geoff Endacott, Halwill and £180 for WA Raffe & Son, Bradworthy.

210 Store Cattle

A respective entry of cattle this week, stronger cattle held firm. Top on the day being £2560 for a 31mth Simmental from Mr S Norman, Dolton (non FA). British Blues topped at £2300 for two 19mth British Blues from Messrs H & M Thorne, Umberleigh, who sold others £2120 and three from Messrs G & G Heal, Umberleigh £1950 (x3).

Native steers to a top of £2200 for an 18mth Aberdeen Angus from Messrs H & M Thorne, Umberleigh. Other Aberdeen Angus from Mr S Norman, Dolton £2190, who sold Saler steers to £2140. Best of the Herefords was £2090 for a 19mth steer from Messrs G & G Heal, Umberleigh. Several well fleshed heifers topped at £2290 for two Charolais from Mr N Goaman, Clovelly, who sold British Blues to £2080 and £1960.

Four thick Charolais heifers from Mr MT Allin, Grimscott sold well at £1990. Limousins from the same farm £1890. Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1890 for a smart lengthy type from Messrs MW, DM & WM Jenkin, Callington. Other Aberdeen Angus heifers from Messrs G & G Heal, Umberleigh £1850.

Younger Stores

Another flying trade this week. 14mth Hereford steers from Mr D Ridd, West Buckland £1550. Hereford heifers from the same stable £1400. Another superb consignment of sixty 7-8mth Fleckvieh steers saw a great deal of interest with the overall average of £1287, being up £150 on the previous week, topping at an impressive £1400 (x9).

A nice run of 8mth Aberdeen Angus from Mr AJ Pomeroy & Son, Putford topped at £1040 (x5), others £1020 and £1010. Heifers to £1020, others £950. A strong young bull trade and more required please. Top of £1480 for a 13mth British Blue from DI & ML Wootton, Broadwood, whose other younger 11mth British Blues and Limousins hit £1360.

Grazing Cows

Top this week was £1680 for a Simmental cow from Messrs RA & GC Hurford, Bude.
