646 Fat Lambs, 186 Draft Ewes and Rams

Larger entry met a firm trade with a lot more lambs showing the wet weather we have had lately and were hardly lean.

The good meat lambs sold to a top of 328ppk from Ryan Bridgman of Clawton for 38kg £124.50. Prize for highest pence per kilo (pen of 3 or more) was won by Mike Down of Whitsby Barton 327kg for 42kgs £137.50.

326ppk was realised by 4 vendors. Top per head on the day was £175.50 prize for 3 or more lambs was won by lauraen shadrick of Great lakes, Holsworthy.

Draft Ewes

Larger entry and again a very fast trade and more could have been sold.

Top price and prize winner was won by Geoffry & Simon Grigg of Weach Barton, Bideofrd whose Suffolk x saw £168. Texel x ewes to £166 from Richard Pillman of Crabb Farm, Poughill. On the day Mules to £153 and Grazing ewes at £120 - £135.

271 Store Lambs

Good entry and a mixed bunch met a strong trade with the larger framed lambs to a top of £130 from prize winners, Max Allin of Launcells and Mark Thomas of Liskeard.

There were several other pens to £120-£128.

504 Calves and Weaned Calves

Weaned Calves

A smaller entry of weaned calves today, which attained £900 (6m) for a single Devon x Steer from IM Mitchell, Lostwithiel who won the overall best stirk in our Christmas Show and Sale.

Milk Calves

A serious calf trade for everything forward with 203 calves sold over £500.

Top call was a colossal £850 given for a very young, 40-day old beautiful Charolais bull (Champion Bull) in from LJ Goaman, Hartland others from the same farm at £710, more away well at £680 for SEJ Tapp & Son, £655 for a very young type for J Sillifant, Pancrasweek who sold more extremely well at £600, others for BD & DG Andrew at £600. Next up, 100 Blue bulls averaged £479.

To a top of £850 given for a trio of strong Bulls in from O Petherick, Kilkhampton followed by young Blue bulls at a mammoth £715 for J &TE Cann, Highampton, £715 also for Rachel Poole, Milton Damerel, £680 Messrs Kendall, Bodmin who sold more at £670, £650, £640 x2 and £638, more £660 for Colgrove Partnership.

Limousin bulls fetched £700 for a very sweet sort for NC & RM Skinner, Halwill, younger types to £575 for Wrangworthy dairy and £572 for AJ & PE Nancekivell, Kilkhampton. Simmental bulls saw huge interest and reached £655 for a young sort in from J Sillifant who sold more at £580, £560 and £470.

A sweet, well put together Inra 95 bull achieved £690 for BD & DG Andrew followed by angus bull which reached a high of £670 for a group in from DG & LA Risdon, younger sorts to £595 fir AJ & JJ Tucker, Stibb Cross, £580 James Warren, Penzance and £538 for Martin Wallis, Helston.

Hereford bulls attained £450 for ARP Farming, Pancrasweek and £450 also for GC & LA Jones, Crediton.

Heifers sold very well again and reached £800 for a very special Blue heifer (Champion heifer and overall best calf) sold by GC & LA Jones, a credit to them.

They sold another on behind at £720 more to £640 x2 O Petherick, £620 Rachel Poole and heaps and heaps of good blue heifers over £500.

Charolais heifers saw huge demand and soared up to £660 for a super star from LJ Goaman, more away well at £650 SEJ Tapp, £635 for BD & DG Andrew, with all the Charolais heifers averaging £511.

Sweet Limousin heifers reached £500 for NC & RM Skinner, £465 AJ & PE Nancekivell and £440 for Wrangworthy dairy followed by Simmental heifer at £460 for Messrs Kendal again.

Dairy Sired Bulls

A decent show of 40 Friesian bulls which averaged £135 per head to a top of £245 for DAN & JM Parkhouse, Gorran.

410 Store Cattle

A big thank you to all concerned for yesterday’s sale which saw another huge crowd of buyers around the ring, many travelling long distances for the quality on offer.

The stronger cattle with flesh saw very strong bidding topping at £2330 for a 27mth Charolais from Messrs SR & SM Crocker of Lewdon.

Two smart 20mth Charolais from Messrs D&E Kirk of Ashwater raced away to £2320, four younger 16mth single suckled Charolais from Mr AS May of Week St Mary to £2200 and two 25mth Charolais from Mr PH Reed of Milton Dameral at £2190.

British blue steers from Messrs EG Bluett & Son of North Tamerton to £2210(3) others from Messrs T & J Adams & Son of Torrington at £2200(2) who topped the Limousins with four at 23mths realising £2190.

Several good consignments of native cattle topped at £2290 for two at 26mth form GH Worth of Thornbury who sold others at £2260 & £2180.

Dairy x Aberdeen angus steers from Messrs JRJ & L Quance of Shebbear topped at £2110(4) others at £2100 and £2090 who topped the Herefords at £2100 (5).

Other Herefords from Mr C Mcwhirter of Winkleigh to £2000 and four 18mth Hereford steers from Mr CH Worth to £1900.

Top of the heifers was £2160 for four well farmed 24mth British blues from Messrs EG Bluett & Son of North Tamerton others at £1950 and two 25mth British blue heifers from Messrs T&J Adams of Torrington to £2080.

Three smart single suckled Charolais heifers from Mr AS May of Week St Mary to £2090, Limousin heifers to £2000 for three from Messrs T&J Adams & Son other Limousins from JR & HJ Ovens of Halwill at £1920.

Younger Stores

Two Limousin steers from Messrs DF & ER James of Halwill topped at £1560, 14mths British blue heifers from Messrs R Wood & Partners of Holsworthy to £1560(6) & £1480(6).

A cracking run of 12mth Aberdeen angus steers and heifers from Messrs G Cole & Son of Pancrasweek saw the first bunch of 5 hitting £1520 others at £1350 & heifers to £1210.

A good run of 11mth cattle from MJ & RE Andrews of Launceston topped at £1470 for four Herefords, 11mth Hereford heifers from the same farm at £1370 & their younger British blues selling well at £1420 for steers & £1210 for heifers.

A cracking consignment of 7-10mth Herefords from Mr N Shadrick of Holsworthy saw steers to £1410 other 7mth steers at £1040 & £960 and heifers to £890(9) & £820(8).

Grazing Cows

A 6-year-old Limousin steer from I Jeffery of Bideford topped at £1340. Dairy x grazing cows from Mr M Vickery of Bude at £1270 & £1070.

Older out of the parlour types from Messrs LS Higgings of Liskeard to £990(3). Beef cows from Messrs S&L Knight of Highampton British blues to £1120 & Herefords to £1110.

OTM Weighing Cows

261ppk was at the top for a shapely 768kilo Aberdeen angus cow from Mr KW Thorne of Hartland realising £2004.

107 Dairy Cattle

Despite recent milk price cuts, trade remains very buoyant, especially for 1st quality types.

Topping the sale of cows at £3350 was the Second Prize Cow ‘Wardada Marcello Vicky GP81’ yielding 35Kgs on behalf of the Messrs T & J Adams & Sons of Torrington.

This was followed by the Overall Champion and Frist Prize Cow, a 3rd calver ‘Newrock Score Madeline 25 VG89’ on behalf of Messrs RAS Johns & Partners of Shebbear who sold to £3100.

Messrs RJ Weeks & Son of Hartland also saw fresh cows rise to £3100 with Mr and Mrs DJ Heller of Truro selling a 2nd calver ‘Aclandfarm Monument Tripoli GP80’ at £3100.

The Heller Family sold a super consignment of fresh calvers with other cows selling to £3000 and £2850. A 2nd calving cow ‘Winkleigh Top Fudge’ yielding 49Kgs sold to £2600 with Messrs H Burrows & Sons of Woolacombe selling a 2nd calving cow ‘Glendene Koo 51’ at £2600.

Heifers also met a good trade topping at £3000 for ‘Aclandfarm Callen Aaltje’ on behalf of the Heller Family, with others selling to £2650.

The Second Prize Heifer ‘Bartinney Hampshire Marjorie’ and Third Prize Heifer ‘Bartinney Solarpower Cherry Pie’ both sold to £2800 on behalf of Messrs RJ & JR Warren of Penzance.

The Harris Family realised £2600 for a fresh heifer ‘Winkleigh Top Tlinda 13’. However, lower yielding heifers, lacking a little condition, met a more selective trade.

In calf heifers saw a consistent trade topping at £1950 (x2), both for ‘Bucourt’ bred heifers due in February and sold on behalf of Moreton Pound Farm Ltd of Bude.

The same vendor also sold heifers to £1720, £1600 and £1550. Messrs KJ Waldon & Partners of Umberleigh topped at £1720 for a heifer due in February. Messrs I & E Moss of Solihull, West Midlands sold a consignment of heifers due January onwards topping at £1520.

Youngstock saw an improved trade topping at £910 for a group of well-bred and wellgrown yearling heifers from the ‘Wardada’ herd on behalf of the Adams Family.

A pedigree Aberdeen Angus Bull born 2018 realised £2420 on behalf of Mr KM Thorne of Hartland.
