A very busy week for the Launceston ladies last week with several fixtures to partake in when the weather was perfect for golf (well most of the week!)
On Monday a league match was played against Looe at home with the final result being halved overall. The team members were Jan Harrison won, Carole Hutchinson won, Barbara Murton won, Irene Butler lost, Gwen Stoneman lost, Sally Jones lost, and Gill Grigg halved.
Tuesday was the day for The Dunheved Trophy, an 18 hole Stableford for the senior ladies, another beautiful sunny day and the winner of the trophy, bringing her handicap down into the Silver division with 39 points, was Sally Jones; 2nd, Sylvia Brown 37 points; 3rd, Joan Cawley 34 points.
Wednesday saw the ladies making a trip to China Fleet Golf Club for a friendly match, a 4BBB match play which resulted in a three and a half to a half to China Fleet. Again a very pleasant day enjoyed by the team of Helen Davey, Joanne Harding, Pam Wevill, Mavis Wright, Roma McMahon, Elizabeth Swords, Irene Bessell and Anthea Kelsey.
On Thursday, June 4 The Betty Ryan Trophy was played in dry, sunny conditions with a breeze to keep the heat off. An 18 hole greensomes medal off half combined handicaps, won by Debbie Thomas (the late Betty Ryan's niece) and Dolly Avery nett 67; 2nd, Liz Hicks and Carol Squires nett 69; 3rd, Carole Hutchinson and Sylvia Brown nett 70.5; 4th, Anthea Kelsey and Gill Grigg.
Saturday, the Ron Martin Trophy, a better ball medal off a three quarter handicap in pouring rain and the weather didn't improve but an excellent result of 68 by Micah Carroll and Debbie Thomas; 2nd, Beth Ratcliffe and Roma McMahon 70 (on the back 9); 3rd, Jan Harrison and Gwen Stoneman 70.
Sunday, June 7 they were drawn to play against Trevose at China Fleet Golf and Country Club in their first round of The Gammon. The weather was mostly kind with only a couple of light showers, an excellent result for Launceston winning 5-2, some of the matches being very close, played in great spirit and friendliness which was conveyed in both the captains' speeches at the meal afterwards.
The team results were: Micah Carroll beat Tricia Prescott on the 20th; Jan Harrison won 4/2 against Carolyn Gammon; Carole Hutchinson lost 2/1 to June Phillips; Avril Starling won 2/1 against Lesley Organ; Barbara Murton won 4/2 against Vanessa Eldridge; Liz Hicks won 6/5 against Norma Richards, and Wendy Collins lost 4/3 against Helen Haley.
Team caddies were Jenny Seabourne, Mavis Wright, Helen Davey, Sally Jones, Rosemary Russell, Bridget Christophers, and Heather Jasper. The team now looks forward to the next round to be held on July 5.
