LAUNCESTON Town Council has been asked to take part in a new scheme aimed at combatting the issues of dog fouling.

The ‘We’re Watching You’ dog fouling campaign was discussed by councillors at the January 21 meeting.

The town council was approached by Cornwall Council to get involved, after being identified as being ‘very active’ in regards to partnership working.

The scheme is run in conjunction with Keep Britain Tidy.

The town council has been provided with three A3 ‘eyes’ signs to be dedicated to a chosen hot spot for dog fouling in the area.

In conjunction with advice from the council’s grounds maintenance colleagues, the council will be targeting Dunheved Road.

Mayor, Cllr Dave Gordon said: “I personally think it’s a step forward, but it won’t solve the problem that’s for sure.”

Cllr Rob Tremain added: “It’s something we’ve been beavering on about, the dog fouling problems in the town, for a considerable time.”

Clerk to the council, Christopher Drake explained the process, with the first part to clear the area, then record any incidents, the next part will see the signs being erected.

The site will continue to be monitored to see if the signs have had any impact in reducing dog fouling.

All of the details will be forwarded to Cornwall Council for consideration, who may ask that the town council continues to monitor the hot spot on a weekly basis to see if the signage has a long term effect.
