DIESEL prices have hit an all time high, with some locations in Holsworthy even surpassing £2 per litre.

The RAC has revealed that the price of diesel is higher than ever before, as fuel prices climb as a result of the war in the Middle East.

According to the automotive services company, the price of unleaded sits at 174.13p on average, while diesel sits around 196.29p. While the disparity between the two is to be expected, the largest concern for drivers will be predictions for petrol prices to fall, while experts expect diesel prices to rise further.

However, for drivers in Holsworthy, the situation is even worse, with diesel prices sitting above the average, with some sites charging between 199.9p and 200.04p, hitting the wallets of local motorists.

Frustration will only be heightened by the disparity between the town’s prices and those nearby. While Holsworthy pays over the odds, drivers in Launceston continue to pay around 191.9p, a difference which could see drivers spending £20 receive nearly half a litre more than those only a matter of miles up the road.

The RAC says that average petrol and diesel prices hit records during the summer of 2022, with the highest ever average price sitting at 191.5p per litre of petrol on July 3, 2022 and 199.09p per litre of diesel on June 25, 2022. However, with this week’s hikes, the record cost for diesel has been surpassed with it expected to continue to rise.

The company has also explained that ‘local retail dynamics play a large part’ in why there can be such a discrepancy between the cost of fuel in nearby towns.

As the cost of living continues to squeeze households, rural residents reliant on cars will be hoping prices drop as soon as possible.
