VANDALS have stolen toilet paper again as well as damaged children’s play equipment in Launceston — the town council has hit out against the ‘senseless’ incidents.

The town council took to Facebook last week, and said brand new metal toilet roll holders were destroyed and rolls of paper stolen from the conveniences at Newport.

All of the 69 toilet rolls placed by the town council in public toilets in July have been taken.

In the Priory Park play area, equipment had to be cordoned off until replacement after a climbing rope and its re-enforced wire were cut through, meaning the equipment is now unavailable for use during the summer holidays.

Town council staff described the damage as ‘senseless’, adding that screws had been removed from benches at Riverside.

They added: “It’s so relentless and across a huge range of assets. The town council is running them because we want to run them, we want the town to have these good things.

“We run every single public toilet in this town. If it wasn’t for us this town would have no public conveniences at all.”

The town council has stressed it does not want to close assets, but is pleading with whoever is causing the damage to stop, and wants to make them aware of the long term implications of their actions.

They added: “We cannot sustain the costs of perpetual repair. We do not have a free and unending supply of paper rolls for the public toilets.

“The children of the town do not want to lose play equipment and the town council want to provide assets and services for Launceston.

“Please, please stop vandalising and stealing from these places. Please.

“We are aware and we’re doing what we can. We need people to support us.”

The public toilets will be randomly checked, while the council’s estates and properties committee has agreed to set up a working group to look at what can be done at Priory Park, and whether grant money can be secured for more new equipment and resurfacing.

Anyone with information relating to the damage is asked to contact the police on 101.
