ST MARY Magdalene Church, Launceston, could be open by the end of the week after it was closed over a month ago due to safety reasons.
On July 21 a decorative timber rib fell from the ceiling at the church, causing it to be closed. Since the incident, a full survey of the ceiling has taken place and many more of the ribs, bosses and 'angels' have been found to be "very loose" or "a bit wobbly" throughout the church.
Restorative work began last Thursday (August 29) to secure loose items, with the hope that St Mary's will open again by the end of the week. A scheme is to be prepared for re-securing all of the timber work (not currently loose) to prevent any future problems.
