IT IS a rare occasion for all 48 of J S Bach’s preludes and fugues to be played together, but that is the plan for music teacher Gareth Stubberfield, as was made clear at a performance at Lanteglos recently.

To play all 48 in one go would be a step too far, not only for a musician but also for the audience. So the 48 will be divided into four concerts over the next few months. The first concert in the series was held recently in St Julitta’s Church, Lanteglos by Camelford.

This medieval church has wonderful acoustics, which makes it possible to sit anywhere in the church and appreciate the full clarity and beauty of the music. Gareth played the preludes and fugues on a stage piano with both piano and harpsichord settings, and gave informative introductions to the music. A couple of contrasting pieces also by Bach were played on the church organ with great style and panache.

There are three more concerts in this series. Keep an eye on the church website, www.lanteglos-bycamelford-church.com for dates and times. Another unusual but very different concert will take place on July 20 at the church with an extremely talented, international prize winning 13-year-old violinist. He will play solo violin in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with the Penzance Youth String Orchestra. Details are on the church website or by phoning John on 07740 421393.
