A BUDE Rural Community Speed Watch Day was held on Wednesday in the area.

This was a speed watch day being carried out by police, PCSOs and police volunteers in various locations around the Bude rural area.

It took place at varied times and police said it was more of an education event for members of the public rather than officers looking to prosecute every one caught.

PC Gary Luxton, from Bude Police, said: "I have been the rural beat manager for several months now and through speaking with the community and through the PACT process that was carried out, speeding vehicles has been identified as the priority for most areas.

The Police Volunteers are members of the community that have undergone training to assist the police in tackling this problem.

Prior to the event, PC Luxton added: "Being volunteers and doing this in their own time I would ask that they are shown the greatest respect by all motorists and any abuse that goes their way, as has is the past, I will deal with."

There will be speed detection sites set up at Widemouth Bay, Wainhouse Corner and Whitstone, and if your vehicle is detected breaking the speed limit, then the registered keeper will be sent a warning letter.

This is instead of the three points on your licence and fine that you could normally get if it was not the police volunteers doing the speed detection.

PC Luxton explained: "Your vehicle details are held on our system, if you are caught again by community speed watch then you receive another letter, but will also be looked at more closely by local police and traffic officers.

"Community speed watch is a way that we hope we can educate drivers who do not intentionally break speed limits and will hopefully serve to remind people of their duty to obey the law."
