One local author from Launceston, Marion Gavin has just passed a higher distinction level three award in pet bereavement counselling. Marion is a trained counsellor with Cruse but has not worked for sometime.
She thought by doing this, it is something different to help people get through the loss of losing a pet, which can be as traumatic as losing a loved one. Most animals are part of the family.
Marion has written two books about her Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Barley and Oliver.
Her latest book ‘Born to be free’ was written last year to raise money for Jo Dudek who ran the London Marathon for the Blue Cross animal charity. Jo is the owner and senior vet at Vets 4 Pets in Launceston.
The two dogs pictured are on the front cover of the book; Georgie (Georgina) and Bella were rescued by Marion from a puppy farm, she had them for eight years but due to age, illness and heart conditions they both passed away within six days of each other last Christmas. Marion and her husband were both devastated. When they came to terms with their loss Marion decided to do this to help other people come to terms with their loss and grieving.
Marion will shortly be inviting vets and nurses from practices in Launceston for a coffee morning/afternoon tea to talk to them about her training and clients who might like to see her.
People will be able to come without a referral from their vet but will need to prove they have recently lost an animal.
