LAUNCESTON Round Table are looking forward to another varied programme of events. This year's chairman, David Robinson, took office in April and has focused the table year on its core fundamentals — namely that of 'fun and fellowship'.
The Round Table was originally an off-shoot of The Rotarians aimed at younger members and has been an integral part of Launceston town since 1963. This year the Round Table has several trips planned including visits to the Nigel Mansell Racing Museum, the excellent Davidstow War Museum and has scheduled several other meetings including those with other tables notably Plymouth and Bideford. Margate Table in Kent have challenged Launceston to a crazy golf match in Padstow in early August to coincide with their annual camping trip to Cornwall!
The Launceston Table meets every fortnight primarily on a Wednesday evening but are flexible if a popular event requires a different day. The object is for like-minded individuals to do things that normally would not be practical on your own. Recent years have included archery, kayaking along the Tamar, even a day trip to the House of Commons and cultural trips to Barcelona, Prague and this year to Biarritz.
Launceston Table prides itself in a sense of fun and combines this with one major fund raising event a year to raise money for local charities. Historically the table founded the Castle Rock music festival, the firework display and carnival-like events such as the Water Fayre of yesteryear.
Sadly, health and safety have meant this table has to relinquish these events but the spirit of fun lives on. Five years ago Launceston Table were the first organisation to introduce Race Nights to the town which have been copied by other organisations but never bettered.
The table has a genuine mix of all ages with the same sense of fun and adventure and events are held to ensure the wives and girlfriends never feel left out, including a Christmas dinner and a gala Ladies Night which is always popular.
