FIRE crews are working hard to get a wildfire near the Tamar Bridge under control.

Eight appliances are reportedly at the scene, with locals being asked to close their windows due to the amount of smoke in the air.

Tamar Crossings have also issued a warning to drivers to “please take extra care” as visibility across the bridge has been reduced due to the amount of smoke.

A spokesperson said: “We are aware of a significant wildfire in the vicinity of the Tamar Bridge and are continually monitoring the visibility levels caused by the resulting smoke.

“Our teams are assessing conditions to ensure it remains safe for vehicles to continue crossing. If visibility levels change, we will provide further updates.”

In the meantime drivers are advised to not get distracted by the fire and keep their attention on the road.

People are also asked not to attempt to take photographs or videos while driving to ensure the safety of themselves and others.

The spokesperson continued: “Take extra care when approaching the toll plaza. Our staff are walking around the area as we monitor the situation, so please slow down and follow any instructions from our team.

|If you encounter smoke, reduce your speed and increase your following distance. Keep windows closed if smoke is affecting the road. Be prepared for reduced visibility and avoid sudden manoeuvres.

“Please follow the instructions of emergency services and do not stop on the bridge or approach the area to watch the fire.

“We appreciate your patience and cooperation while we continue to monitor the situation and work to keep everyone travelling safely.”
