DEVON and Cornwall Police have launched an investigation after ANPR cameras were vandalised in some of North Cornwall’s best beauty spots.

The ANPR cameras have been fitted in rural areas between St Merryn and Trekenning have repeatedly been targeted over a number of months, with some being stolen entirely.

Devon and Cornwall Police have launched an appeal for any information, stating that they have been made aware following a number of reports of damage being caused to ANPR cameras put in place to prevent rural crime in North Cornwall.

They added that that the ANPR cameras that have been the subject to vandalism and theft were ones used as part of the monitoring and enforcement of speed limits, as opposed to the type frequently seen in private car parks in the area.

They are asking that anyone who might have information about the damage is asked to get in touch via 101 or our website quoting 50260134413, or to call 999 if a crime is ongoing.

Chief Inspector Simon Jenkinson, Head of Roads Policing said: “It is extremely disappointing that cameras paid for with public money and with the intention of protecting our communities have been deliberately targeted.

“Rural crime has a huge impact in Cornwall and Devon and those affected can no longer go about their daily business.

“Each time a camera is damaged or stolen it is replaced at considerable cost – a bill ultimately picked up by the tax payer.

“These cameras are not put in place to catch speeding motorists, but to help keep our rural communities safe from crime.

“Anybody with information about the damage is asked to get in touch via 101 or our website quoting 50260134413. Please call 999 if a crime is ongoing.”
