Clovelly Pilot Gig Club

SEVERAL team members from the Bude area were part of the Clovelly Pilot Gig Club’s ladies’ team as they picked up a first trophy of the season, winning their group convincingly at the World Championships on the Scillies.

In the final race they got off the start strongly, pulled away from the rest of the field and maintained great form to cross the finish line well ahead of the competition.

Clovelly ladies’ captain Fiona Farley, who lives and works in Bude, said: “That was just great. The girls put it all together when it mattered, and to win like that was superb — a great result for the crew in the boat, and for those who rowed in the earlier heats.”

Clovelly’s men also had a good weekend, finishing in the same group as last year despite having to borrow rowers on the day to make up a full crew. Men’s captain Christine Smale said: “Some of our men couldn’t make the trip this year but the guys who stepped in from other clubs gelled well with our crew and together they did us proud.”

Clovelly Ladies team were made up of Fiona Farley, Christine Smale, Dominique Perring, Tam Hopgood, Debbie Ishere, Mary Hilton, Titch Taylor, Shirley White, and Mary Billson. The coxes were Tam Hopgood, Paul Smale and Neil Wonnacott.
