THE first weekend of the New Year is always an exciting one for sports fans, although much of the local football programme was called off.

All five of the Post area clubs in SWPL Premier West – Bude Town, Callington Town, Camelford, Holsworthy and Launceston – saw their matches postponed due to the bad weather, with only two games going ahead in the division at Mullion and Sticker.

The St Piran League programme was also heavily affected with only a handful of games going ahead across the five east divisions, including defeats for Callington Town Reserves, Launceston Reserves and North Petherwin in Premier Division East.

Boscastle were the big winners in Division One East as they thrashed St Columb Major, who only turned up to Forrabury Park with ten, 9-0.

However, there was good news for Premier Division East table-toppers St Dominick as they reached the last four of the League Cup as they won 4-2 at Hayle thanks to a hat-trick from Lee Robinson.

Luckily the poor weather had no affect on the rugby.

Launceston were comfortable 46-3 winners over Matson in Regional One South West, although it was a tough day for Bude who were hammered 109-7 at league leaders Plymstock Albion Oaks in Counties One Western West.

There are reports from both matches as well as the second teams of Launceston and Bude, plus Launceston Ladies who took a giant step towards promotion from Women’s NC 2 South West (West) against previous leaders Bideford.

The Cornwall Cricket League have announced the final divisions ahead of the 2024 season which gets underway in April, while Bude, who play in Division Two East, have announced that Australian left-armer Brett Hunter is to return for a second summer. We hear from Seasiders captain Warren Rumble on the news.

Elsewhere, we catch up with San Tsuru Academy in Launceston as they have awarded two purple belts for the first time in the Brazilian jiu-jitsu club’s short history. We get the thoughts of proud head coach, Nathan Haynes.

As ever there’s the latest from the world of racquet sports, including a Christmas tournament at Bude Tennis Club and a win for Holsworthy’s Nathan Jukes in the North Devon Table Tennis League’s hard bat competition in Bideford.

We also find out what’s been going on in the Holsworthy and District Men’s Skittles League and the West Hockey League as Launceston Ladies returned to action on Saturday, plus lots more!
