The five-man scratch team from Tenby played a final qualifying tie against Carmarthen at Newport Sands Golf Club last Sunday afternoon.

A strong south-westerly wind blew over the links course throughout the round. Carmarthen fielded an established quintet, whereas the Tenby side was younger, albeit not lacking in experience.

First out was Tenby's Richard Morton against Steven Rees. Morton was up early on, but then bogied three consecutive holes for Rees to level matters. However, Morton finished stronger and won two and one.

Dan Farmer was never behind against Carmarthen's Ian Marks and held on to win, also by two and one.

Tenby's Mike Schooling and Ed Wheeler, of Carmarthen, started in fourth spot, but were called through the game ahead. Schooling trailed early on, but found his form on the links on the back nine and ran out a two and one winner. Thus, with Tenby having an unassailable three nil lead, the unfinished games were called in from the course.

Young Luke Harries was one up after 16 holes against Chris Reynolds. Tenby skipper, Dave Morris, was three down after eight holes against Dai Thomas, but was all-square after 15 when play was halted.

The Tenby squad are now looking forward to the Welsh Team Championship Finals which will be held at The Glamorganshire Golf Club in Penarth on August 14 - 16.
