AN EXCITING new table tennis initiative kicked off in style this weekend at The Weir cafe, in Marhamchurch.

'Loop', a new project from Table Tennis England which aims to engage adults in social table tennis in a range of non-sporting settings, including cafés and bars, is being piloted in the South West of England.

The pilot has seen an outdoor table installed at the The Weir café overlooking the lake for people to play on for free throughout the summer months, as well as in Walkabout, an Australian themed bar in Newquay and Zafiros Bar and Restaurant in Truro.

Last Sunday's launch at The Weir included an exhibition from Budehaven Table Tennis Club players and coaches as well as 'free play' for the general public. One mother playing with her son said: "We've really enjoyed playing on it. We are staying in one of the cottages, and its been busy every time we walk past. What a great idea!"

Budehaven Table Tennis club head coach Dave Salsbury was on hand at the Weir to show us his skills along with his sons Owen and Fraser, who are North Cornwall junior champions. "Its great to have a table in a public location where people can try the game. Budehaven are always open to new players and we hope to see some of the Weir's customers at our club."

The club meet at Budehaven school sports hall at 7pm on Thursdays.
