THIS year marks the 60th anniversary of Korean martial art, Tae Kwon Do, and Page Family Tae Kwon Do decided to celebrate in style with a "60 x Charity Challenge" for its students.
Chief Instructor Brennen Page challenged his students to complete 60 repetitions of each of his favourite exercises and techniques, including, press ups, sit ups, burpees, kicks (each leg), punches (each arm), knee strikes, patterns, and sparring bouts... that's 600 repetitions in total.
Gathering at Hereford Cathedral School Sports Hall, 25 students from Hereford and Abergavenny PFTKD as well as students from VERVE Abergavenny and Droitwich Tae Kwon Do clubs accepted the challenge.
With the hall fees kindly waived by Hereford Cathedral School, a cake stall selling cakes generously donated by friends of the club, and a prize raffle draw, PFTKD successfully raised money for both Hereford based St Michael's Hospice and Abergavenny's Nevill Hall Hospital. Former Mayor of Abergavenny Martin Hickman visited PFTKD at VERVE Martial Arts Centre to accept a cheque for £500 on behalf of the hospital.
Brennen Page told the Chronicle, "Everyone's effort and support of this event has been overwhelming and has demonstrated such a great spirit and drive from all involved.
"The challenge itself was a lot harder than we all thought and the patterns were surprisingly the hardest part, mentally and physically. I want to congratulate everyone for their hard work, in particular the junior members because it was tough. Stamina and grit is something you achieve with age and those young guys did fantastically."
