the U15 cricket team from Callington Community College were to play Truro School in the County Cricket Final at Grampound Road on Monday, June 22. Due to the bad weather the game was initially called off as their pitch was waterlogged.
After frantic telephone calls, two hours later the game was back on and Callington travelled to Truro School to play the match there. Failure to play the match would have resulted in the final being decided by the toss of a coin.
After being put into bat the team made an excellent start scoring 17 runs for no wicket after two overs, however that is when things changed. With wickets falling like dominos the score at the half way stage was Callington bowled out for 60, the lowest total ever posted in a Cornish final.
The boys, however, seemed rather upbeat and together formed a team plan. Toby May bowled out county opening batsman Tom Orpe. Then on came Luke Brenton, bowling four fast and accurate overs for one wicket conceding only seven runs.
Adam Snowden bowled four overs taking two wickets for eight runs. Truro were now 20-4. Josh Murray-Dustan, the new county bowler, bowled four overs taking four wickets for only two runs.
Eight wickets down Truro had 39 runs. It was to be the job of Aiden Jacob to try and win the game. As the final Truro batsman smashed the ball skywards Rob Piper called 'my ball', steadied himself and the ball landed perfectly in his hands.
Well done to Luke Brenton, Josh Murray-Dustan, Toby May, Robert Piper, Aiden Jacob, Mateo Pearce, Leion Cole, Mark Poad, Richard Gregg, Christian Thomson, Adam Snowden, Dean Miles and their team manager Lee Hazeldine, PE department.
