Upper Tamar Lake Sailing Club race report – Sunday, November 1
FROSTBITE SIX
APPROPRIATELY there was a frosty feel to the morning as the Upper Tamar Lake sailors took to the water for the penultimate race of the club’s Frostbite series.
Brian Pollard’s Bosun (Tash Routley crewing) was first to cross the Home Two start line, making for the Dam in a pleasant south-easterly breeze.
Linda Spiller (Laser) followed closely and got ahead well before they reached the second buoy, Pinky.
Liam Routley looked to be getting an excellent start from further south down the line but ended up needing to tack and lost precious seconds.
Dave Perrett led the Solos throughout, although the gap to Adam Hilton’s almost closed at Inlet on lap two. Robin Spiller, cold and beset with problems, retired his Solo. The wind decreased on lap three, but by then the boats had spread out, but not so far as to prevent the handicap bringing the Pollard/Routley Bosun up to third place.
Results: 1 Linda Spiller (Laser Full); 2 Dave Perrett (Solo); 3 Brian Pollard and Tash Routley (Bosun); 4 Adam Hilton (Solo); 5 Liam Routley (Laser Full). Retired: Robin Spiller (Solo).
SAILBOAT ONE
THE wind had freshened but the cold reduced the fleet. Dave Perrett joined Bob Sampson in the safety boat and Nathan Pollard took over for his first race in a Solo and made the best start.
Linda Spiller also started well and gained the lead until the end of lap one when the Pollard Solo overtook and stayed ahead in strengthening winds.
Results: 1 Nathan Pollard (Solo); 2 Brian Pollard and Tash Routley (Bosun); 3 Linda Spiller (Laser Full); 4 Liam Routley (Laser Full).
Grateful thanks were given to Vicki Duncalf who ran the races, to Bob Sampson, Nathan Pollard and Dave Perrett in the safety boat and to Jenny Routley who took the photos.
