Tribute Cornwall League Two

Camelford 22

Redruth Albany 6

CAMELFORD’s first ever game on their new pitch ended in a 22-6 victory over bottom side Redruth Albany at Lane End.

Camelford had the rare luxury of a full team to choose from with 20 players available on a seemingly nice autumn afternoon.

However, as soon as the whistle went, the heavens appeared to open and wind and rain disrupted the first few moments of the match, which was frustrating to both sides.

It took the home side ten minutes to register a score when the ball was spun wide to outside-centre Peter Thorne who intelligently kicked the ball over the top of the defence and won the race to dot down for the first of his two tries. Fly-half Dan Stuckey was unable to add the extras (5-0).

This score only spurred on the away side, helped by a few Camelford players for the afternoon, to attack the Camelford line, a moment of indiscipline crept into the game and a penalty was given away in front of the posts which was converted to reduce the deficit to just two.

For the next 15 minutes the wheels came off of Camelford’s game and another easy penalty was given away, which was again slotted to put the basement side in front.

Being behind pushed ‘the Ford’ into gaining some territory, and with the forwards taking the ball on tight, an overlap was created. As the ball went wide inside-centre Mike Willshire seemed to have an easy run in, but with two others ready to score the try he offloaded to Thorne for his second 35 minutes in. The conversion was again missed leaving the score at half-time 10-6.

During the half-time period some swaps were made with the Camelford players who were playing for Redruth Albany.

The second 40 started as Camelford were quick out of the blocks making strong runs into the opposition 22. By now the poor weather had made the ball extremely slippery and handling errors from both sides become the norm, but a few pick and goes gave captain Dan Yeatman a chance to cross the line after 48 minutes. Stuckey converted the kick for a 17-6 advantage.

The weather was beginning to disrupt play with plenty of drop balls and mistakes blighting the next few minutes.

On 55 minutes Camelford managed to gain their fourth try and secure the five-point victory with a try from Dan Stuckey, which was unconverted (22-6).

After this the hosts looked to score further tries but an unfortunate event meant the game was cut short on the hour.

The result means ‘the Ford’ have won two of their three games and are also unbeaten at home.

They are next in action on Saturday when they head to top-of-the-table Roseland.
