COUNTIES TWO CORNWALL
Bude 50 Falmouth 0
FOLLOWING their chastening defeat at the hands of Liskeard-Looe the previous week, Bude responded in the best possible fashion with a statement victory over previously unbeaten Falmouth.
The Seasiders were quickly on the attack and on four minutes, following a break from deep by full-back Will Pharo, the ball was quickly recycled and tighthead prop Hayden Chater was able to twist in the tackle and force his way over the line. Fly-half Brad Thomas added the extras.
Then in the 11th minute, left wing Cobi Yelland leaped high to gather the ball and he offloaded inside to Thomas who raced some 40 metres to the line wide out on the right.
Within three minutes Bude went further ahead when a penalty award was kicked to touch and from the resulting line-out, the ball was fed to Fred Saxton who was stopped on the line. However, the ever-alert scrum-half Ollie Rowland was able to pick up and dived over in the corner. Again the conversion attempt fell wide of the mark, but Bude were now 17-0 up despite the best attempts of the Eagles' pack.
On 20 minutes Bude secured the bonus point with their fourth try of the afternoon.
Skipper Will Hockridge, a powerful force in the second row, broke from near the halfway line and as he was tackled, the ball was quickly recycled along the line to Pharo, who, coming into the line to create the extra man, fed Yelland outside him to do the rest.
Thomas again had no luck from the tee, but the hosts were 22-0 ahead, which was how it stayed until half-time.
However, within a minute of the restart the Seasiders were on the attack again and from a set scrum deep in the visitors' half, Saxton broke from the base and fed Pharo who was unstoppable from close-range. This time Thomas converted superbly from an acute angle.
The home side's sixth try came on 53 minutes when a powerful surge from their pack created an opening for hooker Harvey Cholwill to score despite a question mark as to the grounding of the ball. Olly Denford added the extras.
Bude now led 36-0 and just before the hour mark, more good work by Saxton, breaking from a scrum on the visitors' 10-metre line, created an opening for replacement centre Ben Tharme to receive the scoring pass and then scoot away to dot down under the posts. Denford made it 43-0.
The final quarter was a messy affair, which included a yellow for Bude youngster Charlie Firman.
However, there was still time for an eighth try as after Ben Tharme was tackled short, the visitors attempted to break but spilled the ball, allowing Hockridge to dive over.
Denford brought up the half century of points to the delight of the home supporters.
Bude visit much-fancied Helston on Saturday, as do the seconds in the Counties Three Cornwall League Cup.
