CORNWALL RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION UNDER 16S GIRLS SHIELD FINAL AT NEWQUAY RFC
Launceston/Wadebridge 45 Camborne/Penzance 17
IN PERFECT conditions at Newquay, with a packed schedule of cup finals for age grade boys and girls, Launceston and Wadebridge faced off against Camborne and Penzance in the hotly-anticipated Shield final to round off their season.
From the first whistle the girls combined solid ball carrying with expansive running rugby and ran in five tries, all converted by the proficient boot of Amalie Brock to give themselves a deserved half-time advantage.
The second half was a much more even affair with Camborne/Penzance getting the scoreboard credit they deserved despite multiple injury setbacks.
However the Launceston/Wadebridge girls rallied and further extended their lead including a length of the field running masterclass from Wadebridge flyer Mabel Harrison.
As the final whistle blew the girls were crowned Cornwall Shield champions with a score of 45-17.
In a performance that matched her efforts throughout this season, player of the match was awarded to Launceston hooker Karris Bond.
In trophy presentation both sides were commended by CRFU youth chairman Tony Knightsbridge on a match that was a shining example of the spirit in which rugby should be played, and highlighted how the clubs had combined within the cluster system to form a cohesive and inclusive team.
Summing up the season, head coach Gerard L'Arbalestier said: “The standard of rugby played by both teams was high and showed the effort and hard work all the players have put in to improve over the season.”
