BUDE Rugby Club’s first team player/coach, Angus Hodges, admits that he was left ‘frustrated’ by Pirates Amateurs’ decision to postpone their Tribute Cornwall and Devon League clash last Saturday.

The Penzance-based club called off the game when the Seasiders were preparing to set off, meaning fifth-placed Bude still have six games left to play with the end of the season fast approaching.

Hodges said: “We were about to leave at 10.45am when we got a call from our fixture secretary saying the game was off. They said that the pitch was unplayable due to being too wet, and it’s frustrating because it’s yet another game cancelled. The league is supposed to finish by May 5, so we’ll see what happens.”

Although the postponement is clearly annoying, Hodges should at least have more options.

He said: “At the beginning of the week we were really struggling to get a side together. Three of our key players in Joe Wilson, Ed Hilliam-Cooke and Charlie Watton were all unavailable and I was thinking it’s going to be a really tough day. But after plenty of phone calls on Thursday and Friday we managed to get a decent side out and we were ready to go. But unfortunately it was called off, even though we know there was always a chance it was going to happen.”

Bude are scheduled to be back in action this weekend when they entertain relegation-threatened Torrington at Bencoolen Meadow.

Despite failing to win until January, the North Devon side have won three of their last four games to give themselves an outside chance of survival.

However Hodges is expecting his side to put on a show for their supporters.

He said: “We managed to get a good win up there and hopefully we can do the same again. The boys should be chomping at the bit to go out there and put in a good performance. There’s no team in this league where you can just expect to turn up and win so there’s no reason for us to be complacent.

“However, at home I expect us to play well and pick up a win for the supporters as it’s our job to impress those who watch us.”
