Work has already started on preparing for Cornwall Under-20s’ County Championship season in 2020-21.

The 2019-20 rugby campaign was cut short after the Duchy had qualified for the quarter-finals of the Jason Leonard Cup following a stunning win at Gloucestershire in their final group game.

That saw them finish top of their pool and earn a home last-eight tie against Hertfordshire – and only two wins away from a Twickenham final – but the coronavirus pandemic saw the season cancelled, and left the Cornwall players pondering what might have been in different circumstances.

Now Duchy officials are looking ahead to next season and what players will be available to them for selection.

There are a number of players from this past season’s campaign who still qualify, while there will also be a number transitioning from the Cornwall U18s.

The county will also write to all clubs in September asking for them to nominate suitable players, while the management team will be out observing matches and players during the season to identify potential players, once the action gets under way again.

The criteria for a player being eligible is: 1) Must be over the age of 18 before they can either train or play for the U20s (any player who attains the age of 18 during the season but is involved with the U18s section must complete their season before being considered for the U20s);

2) Must be under the age of 20 on September 1, 2020;

3) Born or lives in Cornwall, is registered with a Cornish club or has played for Cornwall at an earlier age grade.
