COUNTIES TWO CORNWALL (SATURDAY)

Launceston Castles 24 Falmouth 31

LAUNCESTON fell to a second straight defeat since promotion as Falmouth’s late try ensured they left Polson Bridge with all five points.

For the hosts, who at least have three bonus points on the board, it shows the fine margins which decide games at a higher level, a fact not lost on team manager Mike Haines.

He said: “On the whole it was a really good performance, it was just the fine margins which didn’t quite go our way.

“A couple of missed tackles here and there and a couple of poor passes or dropped balls were the difference.”

Falmouth took a second minute lead via a penalty before centre Richard Jasper crashed over from close range just four minutes later.

Visiting scrum-half Cam Bullock soon received a yellow card, but outside-centre James Wilson gave the Eagles a 10-5 lead.

Launceston were back ahead 26 minutes in when outside-centre Callum Smith dotted down with Jasper adding the extras (12-10).

But Falmouth, who saw their pack dominate at scrum time, grabbed the lead on the stroke of half-time via Wilson.

The second half saw the score change continually once more.

Falmouth went 24-12 in front via an unconverted try from Cam Hopkins, but the home side got back in it when a kick through from influential fly-half Tom Anderton was seized upon by full-back Mitch Acres.

Just past the hour it was 24-24 as lock Ed Dudden crashed over from close range not long after a 50/22 won Launceston a lineout, and Acres converted.

But just as it looked like the hosts would earn a share of the spoils, Falmouth won it at the end.
