2015 has been another successful year for Launceston Road Runners as their membership continued to grow following a series of very popular starter groups through the beginning of the year.

In February, a group of runners took part in the Barcelona Half Marathon, the first time such a large group participated in an overseas race and it was good to see the LRR running vests amongst such a cosmopolitan group. For a number of runners, the Barcelona run was their very first half marathon — a very memorable trip.

April saw three LRRs take part in the London Marathon — a huge milestone in the running calendar and the group were very prouder to see Launceston represented at such an event.

On September 6, the Club’s annual road race, The Treggy 7, took place. Starting in the town square and following a scenic — and very hilly — route out to Tregadillet, the course returns to finish on the Castle Green. The Treggy 7 was proudly sponsored by local businesses, Mansbridge & Balment, Specsavers and Ambrosia.

Later in September, the Club hosted the ‘Launceston Marathon’ for Ben Smith who had recently begun his mammoth challenge of running 401 marathons in 401 days.

Ben was supported on his run with a strong turn out from the Road runners, many of whom ran the whole route with him. His challenge continues now, as he completes his marathons all over the country raising funds to help sufferers of bullying in the school or workplace.

The road runners were out in force again for the notorious Cornish Marathon in November, with a record number participating in the brutal 26-miler over Bodmin Moor!

Running has never been so popular and remains one of the most accessible and cost effective ways to keep fit — all you need is a pair of running shoes.

The club’s next starter group begins on Tuesday, January 19, aimed at complete beginners. Coaches will guide you through a specifically devised training plan to get beginners up to running 3 miles in eight weeks.

So feel guilt-free over the festive period, and get into shape in the New Year, all are welcome.
