THE annual Holsworthy Community College sports presentation evening took place at the town’s Memorial Hall on Monday, July 18.

In front of more than 140 people, including family and friends, the event got underway with head of PE, Steve Vanstone, welcoming everyone before starting a short video on the recent football trip to Malaga.

Once the video finished, the various teachers discussed the season for each sport, often talking of their pride of the skill and attitude of the players in victory or defeat, before giving out awards for the best player and most improved.

Following the conclusion of all of the respective sport awards, plus special awards given for sports personalities of the year for a boy and girl in each year group up to Year 10 and commitment to sport, a short video from the year of sport played within the college throughout the year was put up on the projector before head of PE, Steve Vanstone, closed the evening by inviting everyone to tuck into the buffet that was provided.

Over the course of the last 12 months, there has been plenty of success within the sporting world of Holsworthy Community College.

The Year 10 football team were the undoubted highlight. Under the leadership of PE teacher and Bath City striker Andy Watkins, they reached the semi-final of the Devon County Cup before reaching the last 16 of the Small Schools competition where they were eventually knocked out by a school in Reading.

On a personal level, there were plenty of players selected for higher honours. In netball, Sophie Powell and Izzy Edworthy have been selected for the North Devon Satellite Academy while Emily Shepherd, Charlotte Crier, Luke Southall and Louise Shepherd have made it into their respective Devon age-group squads for hockey.
