Narberth 31 pts.

Tata Steel 19

Narberth gained the bragging rights over Tata Steel with a 31-19 home win, despite playing with 14 men for most of this entertaining game, to clinch a season double over the visitors.

With both teams fielding re-shuffled sides, it made for an exhilarating game, with Steel particularly dangerous on the counter-attack and individual players in both teams prepared to take on defences.

The Otters took an early lead after four minutes when a superb break by scrum-half Rhys Lane, led to an unconverted try finished by full-back Jonathan Morgan.

Prop Steffan Jones was red-carded shortly afterwards for throwing some punches, with flanker Senio Aioni forced to make way for prop Sean Lloyd to come on to the field.

Following the red card incident, Steel prop John Bamsey scored for the visitors and the reliable boot of fly-half Steve Lewis added the points for the conversion.

A lineout in the right corner led to a try by lock Alex Jenkins when he spotted space to lead the pack over the line. The try was converted from the touchline by Ianto Griffiths.

When Steel flanker Nick Edwards was spending some time in the sin-bin shortly before the interval, quick thinking by centre Steve Martin led to a smart try.

Always prepared to take on defences, Martin picked up a loose ball, chipped over the head of the first defender and somehow evaded the clutches of the others to score a spectacular try in the left corner.

The difficult conversion attempt by Ianto Griffiths looked good, before swerving wide.

Narberth extended the 10 points lead in the first minute of the second half following an effervescent individual effort by Jonathan Morgan, which was converted by Ianto Griffiths.

A few minutes later, and restored to 15 players, Steel got back into the game with a well-worked try by wing Lloyd Rogers, converted by Steve Lewis.

Jonathan Morgan completed his hat-trick of tries for Narberth, by picking up a deft flicked pass from Steve Martin to score in the right corner. Ianto Griffiths converted from the touchline.

One of the features of this open match was the number of individual breakaways by the visitors and the scoring was completed with a try by replacement centre Darren Lewis, converted by Steve Lewis.

Commenting after the match, a jubilant Narberth director of rugby, Jonathan Dodd, said: "With our injury crisis we are delighted with this win in our last home game of the season.

"The boys played with a lot of heart and commitment, both teams played a lot of rugby and there were a number of mistakes in such an unstructured game.

"It was played in good conditions at pace with some good tries scored. It was a backs to the wall effort as we have players who are ill and others are carrying injuries.

"Some of our more established players really stepped up to the mark today."

The Health Centre Balcony Suite match sponsors, Manderwood Timber, selected Narberth centre and captain Steve Martin as man-of-the-match.

Other players to stand out on the day were Jonathan Morgan, Ianto Griffiths, Alex Jenkins and flanker Lewis Wood.

The Folly Farm Otters Holt match sponsors were the Templeton Supporters and the match ball sponsors were John Morris and the Whitland Male Voice Choir, Narberth RFC Former Players, Narberth Athletic and Narberth Under 14 team.
