North Cornwall Table Tennis League 2019/20 weekly round-up

NORTH Hill A continued their winning start to the season in Division One last Thursday night as they won 10-0 at Budehaven D.

Despite Shirley Luckhurst being away on holiday, the trio of Iain Oxenhame, Martin Hynes and Michael Briggs proved too strong as they moved to within eight points of leaders Torridge with two games in-hand.

Torridge were 7-3 winners over Budehaven B at North Tamerton Village Hall.

Peter Freeburn and David Streak overcame a couple of difficult moments, especially from David Ewen to win three apiece, as well as combining in the doubles.

Ewen, David Sillifant and Ashley Taylor all managed to beat Gill Knightley to ensure they remain fourth in the table.

Helland sit third after a 7-3 victory over Budehaven A in a rearranged match at St Austell Table Tennis Centre.

Although Owen Salisbury returned to form with a brilliant double over Ingus Abolnieks and Mike Fisher, who was also edged out by Dave Salisbury in the fifth end, the hosts won the crucial moments.

Ritchie Bartlett was unbeaten all evening while Abolnieks fought off a superb Dave Salisbury comeback to win the opening match of the night, 11-9 in the decider.

Fisher beat Sam Jennings as well as combining with Bartlett to take the doubles point.

Budehaven A were back in action on Thursday night and won 8-2 at Whitstone Wanderers.

Although Mark Beaumont was available once more, Owen Salisbury wasn’t, meaning Tom Venn who plays for Balls of Fury in the North Devon League, made his first appearance in North Cornwall.

Despite beating Doug Genini and Barry Stearman, he narrowly missed out on a treble as Nathan Jukes edged him 12-10 in the fifth.

The rest of the matches were plain sailing except for Genini’s surprise five-set win over Dave Salisbury. Despite being whitewashed in the second end, he fought back to take the next before winning the decider 11-6.

Crackington A earned their third win of the season as they overcame Budehaven C 6-4 at Budehaven Sports Centre.

Helen Murgatroyd was in superb form for the home side in claiming all three as well as combining with Robin Worden to take the doubles.

However Frank Barnes, Judith Cook and Ross Wilmshurst each defeated Worden and Tim Orchard to ensure the visitors took the spoils.

Just two matches took place in Division Two with leaders Crackington B extending their advantage following a 7-3 victory over Altarnun A.

The visitors led 2-1 following Simon Holmes’ victory over Jane Johnson and Alex Whitfield defeating Keiron Chatterjea, but from then on the hosts ground out the points, winning three deciders to ensure they opened up a 19-point gap over North Hill B.

Zach Parker won all three singles along with the doubles with Johnson, while Chatterjea (2) and Johnson added three points in the singles. Whitfield added a brace for Altarnun.

Across the hall, Crackington C took on North Hill B with the visitors leaving with an 8-2 win.

Adrian Davis and David Wilson both managed trebles with Michael Kinger getting the better of Trevor Dean and joining Davis for the doubles, which they were successful in.

James Ellis and Simon Patterson edged past Kinger in deciders for the home points.

It was a good night for two Budehaven teams in Division Three as the F and G sides won at their Bridgerule counterparts.

Ezra Jukes and Phil Hawken combined for the F team as they secured a 5-0 victory over Bridgerule C while Budehaven G were 4-1 winners over Bridgerule B with Saf Wallace (2) and David Scott earning the points in the singles and then together in the doubles.

Raymond Bewes beat Scott for the home point.
