GWERNYFED travelled to Wattstown on Easter Saturday and recorded a hard fought victory.

Within minutes a great break by outside half Gareth Dodds saw him find fullback Geggs Williams on hand and a dummy saw him cut inside for a personal seven pointer.

With Gwernyfed in the ascendancy some powerful forward drives close to the line saw a four to one overlap and Steve Harley kept up his rich vein of try scoring as he touched down. Wiliams converted and just before half time he converted a penalty to take Gwernyfed into half time 17-0 up.

It was certainly a game of two halves as the tenacious home side roared out of the blocks second half and pressurised the away side .

The home outside half either released his backs with good effect or kicked for position and it was from a lineout close to the line that Wattstown scored off a peel. Two further penalties reduced the score to 11-17.

It took some powerful driving play by Gwernyfed's two second rows Hammond and Roberts to set up field position in the home 25 and an indiscretion by one of their forwards saw Williams score his fourth kick of the match to take the score to 11-20 into injury time.

There was just enough time for Wattstown to score their second try which was converted to take the final score to 20-18 and a vital four points on the road to Gwernyfed.

April 11 saw Abercynon visit Trefecca Road and put up a solid performance to stop the homes sides run of home victories.

With a good line out and scrum and a solid forward and back line defence, the home side found it difficult to stamp any pattern on the game.

Two well struck penalties by the away fullback and a try by their winger saw Gwernyfed 0-11 down at halftime against the wind.

Hoping to turn around the score with the wind in their favour it was Abercynon who scored next when a mercurial run by their left winger saw him evade several tackles to record his second try wide out.

Gwernyfed were further hampered when one of their front rows received a yellow for a technical scrum offence which turned to Red.

Down to 14 men the home side rallied and Steve Harley ploughed over but the try was adjudged held up.

James Brute powered over minutes later and it was all Gwernyfed in the last quarter as Abercynon tired. Unfortunately the very high penalty count against the home side especially at line out time saw them fail to reduce the deficit in the final quarter.

The Athletic also at home continued their fine run of form to record their fourth consecutive win defeating Pill Harriers 47-7, the youth going down 25-10 to Treharris.
