LAUNCESTON College Phoenix encountered bottom of the league St Cleer on Saturday, in a tie both sides were desperate to win and improve on their current league standings.

Phoenix started brightly and played some ambitious football which yielded them two early goals. The first saw Jake Benney slip his marker and slam the ball past the outstretched St Cleer goalkeeper.

Minutes later, Luke Williams found himself unmarked yards from goal and converted from close range after some good work by Josh Barron on the left flank.

Phoenix used the natural slope of the pitch to peg their opponents deep in their own half for long periods of the first half, but against the run of play, the referee gave a penalty to St Cleer and the away team converted clinically.
