Upper Tamar Lake Sailing Club race report — Sunday, October 30
AM?Frostbite 5
THE RS200 of Nathan Pollard with Jane Chadney as crew, led the race from the start line, with a fleet of 17 boats in hot pursuit – seven of which were Lasers, three Toppers and two Bosuns!
During the rounding of the first mark, a lull in the breeze split the fleet in two with the RS200 and Lasers in one group plus Vicki Duncalf in her Topper, and the rest following behind.
By West Mark, Vicki had fallen back in her smaller boat to lead the larger group in what was turning out to be rather more than the light airs forecast!
By the end of lap one, a battle was on between Nathan and Jane Anderson in her Laser at the head of the first group, and Elliot Pomeroy with his crew Raily in the Wayfarer, had fought their way through to head the second group.
As the wind freshened even more in the third lap, the two groups began to merge again, with the Enterprise of Alan Comber and John Weller together with Robin Spiller in his Streaker sailing a good steady race in the middle of the fleet.
Nathan finally took line honours followed by a gaggle of Lasers, with a time of 16 minutes separating first from last (John Dabbs in his Gull) before handicap adjustments – the results showing you can be in a small or slow boat and still do exceedingly well!

THE afternoon course remained the same and it was Brian Pollard and Cilla Gilbert in the Bosun who led the fleet off the start line with Paul Whybrow in his Solo and Vicki Duncalf in her Topper following.
However, it was on the run from the Dam up to the other end of the lake that a familiar pattern evolved, with three Laser’s of Bob Sampson, Sue Murray and Jane Anderson, and Nathan Pollard’s RS200 again at the front of the fleet, but also featuring Paul Whybrow.
The RS200 eventually lost out to the Laser’s, and by lap two, Elliot and Rachael Pomeroy in the Wayfarer had joined Whybrow just behind the leaders.
Penny Abbott, Robin and Brian were never far behind and John Savage was keeping a constant 11th position in all laps.
Sampson finally took line honours, with Nathan nipping in to finish second on the line after an upwind tacking duel with Anderson.
1. B Sampson (Laser); 2. J Anderson (Laser); 3. N Pollard & J Chadney (RS200); 4. S Murray (Laser); 5. P Whybrow (Solo); 6. E & R Pomeroy (Wayfarer); 7. R Spiller (Streaker); 8. B Pollard & C Gilbert (Bosun); 9. P Abbott (Laser); 10. J Dabbs (Gull); 11. T Tobias (Bosun); 12. V Duncalf (Topper); 13. J Duncalf (Topper); 14. J Weller & A Comber (Enterprise); 15. Many thanks were expressed to Paul Anderson for undertaking Race Officer duties throughout what was a glorious day despite the stronger than expected winds.
