THE Holsworthy and District Ladies Skittle League’s annual knockout cup competitions took place at the town’s Memorial Hall throughout March.

Five Founders Cup – Saturday, March 2

NEARLY 200 players, from the surrounding areas sent teams of six to this competition, which saw many close games, including a thrilling semi-final between Milton Damerel and Pyworthy, which Milton Damerel won by just three pins.

Throughout the day Milton Damerel, played splendidly, scoring well and producing consistent skittles, and ended up deserving winners after beating Halwill C/D 342-332 in the final.

Top Score: Vlad Wilkinson (St Giles) — 73, including a 25 spare; Pat Trout (Halwill C/D) managed a 22 spare

Challenge Cup – Saturday, March 16

THE competition was again played in teams of six with participants being the players who had not taken place in the Five Founders Cup.

There was a much larger attendance with many players taking part for the first time and enjoying competitive and sporting games.

Highampton floored the highest game score of the day but where beaten by 303 pins to 288 in the final by Magpie/RBL.

Individual Cup – Friday, March 15

THIS event is shared by the Men’s Skittle League Individual Knockout competition.

Each of the ladies’ clubs’ highest average throughout the winter season competed for this cup and again the games were closely contested.

The best performances of the competition were saved for the beginning in the preliminary round as Jill Hooper (Boyton) and Mandy Walter (Milton Damerel) both managed 69 pins, the best score of the competition. 

Clawton’s Lisa Cornish had a close call in the quarter-final against Magpie/RBL’s Mary Martin (57-56) but made it though to the final where she took on Walter, who played well throughout the rounds, averaging over 60 pins per game. 

Although the final wasn’t as high quality, the drama was high with Walter sneaking home 52-50.

League spokesperson, Bernadette Sluggett, said: “During the day the refreshment ‘Cafe’ was the chill-out spot for a chat and super grub provided by Linda and Christine Knight.

“We are only able to hold our recreational days by skittle clubs taking turns in helping with preparation, a big ‘thank you’ from the committee to all.”
