WEST HOCKEY LEAGUE WOMEN’S TRELAWNEY DIVISION ONE

Newquay Thirds 4 Bude 5

BRYONY Varcoe grabbed a late winner as Bude withheld a stirring comeback from Newquay to secure their first victory of the season.

The Seasiders headed to Penair School in Truro with a strong squad of 13, which included goalkeeper Rach Pomeroy, back to action following an injury sustained last season.

She lined up behind the three-person defence of Elsa Edwards, debutant Tilly Collins and Clarey Westaway, all of whom enjoyed decent games.

In midfield, Caroline Hockridge, Willow Du Plessis, Naomi Hatcher, Charlotte Kingdon, and Evelyn Varcoe worked tirelessly, linking play well with the attacking line of Amber Quinn, Chloe Hall, and Bryony Varcoe.

Bude started brilliantly, dominating the first half and taking a commanding 4-1 lead into the break. Goals came from Caroline Hockridge (2) and a special moment as mother and daughter Bryony and Evie Varcoe both found the back of the net. Spirits were high at half-time after an excellent attacking display.

The second half, however, saw Newquay come out much stronger. After some determined play, they managed to level the score at 4-4, putting Bude under real pressure.

But despite tiring legs and the team losing a bit of shape, the Seasiders dug deep and responded as late on, Bryony Varcoe struck again to secure a 5-4 victory in a game that will live long in the memory.

Team spokesperson and captain Chloe Hall said: “It was an outstanding performance across the team: Caroline’s two superb goals, Evie’s great finish, and Bryony’s vital brace highlighted a strong attacking effort.”

Bude’s next league game is on Saturday, November 8 when they welcome second bottom University of Plymouth Seconds.

The Seasiders’ victory moved them up to seventh in the 10-team division with three points from four games.
