WEST HOCKEY LEAGUE MEN’S DIVISION TWO SOUTH
Bude 0 Ocean City 7
BUDE were promoted last season, but the new-look Seasiders were given a rude introduction to life at a higher level as Ocean City ran out 7-0 winners at the Budehaven Sports Centre.
A combination of university and travelling meant the Cornishmen knew they would find life tougher, but further injuries plus work and social commitments mean it could be a tough few weeks before players start to return.
The shining light was the youngsters that sacrificed themselves and the development team’s league match to support the first team as the whole club pulled together.
Ocean City started well and were gifted an easy opportunity on 10 minutes and they made no mistake with a quick one-on-one with the keeper.
They then stamped their authority on the game with two simple, yet well-worked penalty corner goals to give them a 3-0 cushion after just 25 minutes.
Still under huge pressure, Bude keeper Andy Davis made a good number of saves and the defence switched how they defended Ocean City’s abundance of dangerous penalty corner routines.
This stemmed the tide somewhat, before a fourth just before the break
Half-time did allow Bude to reset and focus on the positives and their goals which was not the scoreline but more their performance and attitude.
Bude started the second half well, but an early breakaway goal by the visitors after just five minutes could have knocked the stuffing out them.
But they battened down the hatches and rallied well, but with the pressure mounting, Ocean City scored their sixth goal through another slick penalty corner routine.
Bude then showed their true grit at both ends of the pitch first with Davis stepping up to save a penalty flick low into his bottom right corner with a perfectly outstretched toe.
Then the attack strung together a series of lovely passes to get in on goal and earn their first short corner of the game which was taken well but went narrowly wide.
Ocean City got their seventh goal late on with a shot that was going miles wide until it was deflected in to add insult to injury.
The home man-of-the-match was midfielder Robin Jennings.
