HELLAND A are now the only unbeaten team in Division One of the North Cornwall Table Tennis League as previous leaders Budehaven A lost at home to Torridge in week five of the competition.

Budehaven A had won two from two so far but lost 6-4 against Torridge who are enjoying the services of Berkshire player David Streak, who has moved to the area.

He made it six wins from six for his new club as he won all three singles outings as well as the doubles with Jill Knightley.

Knightley and Bob Montague beat Denis Hough but both lost to Dave Salisbury and the returning Helen Murgatroyd, although Salisbury needed a remarkable comeback from 10-5 down in the last set to beat Montague 13-11.

Helland A are now four points clear at the top after a 6-4 home win over North Hill A, who were without Shirley Luckhurst.

The trio of Ingus Abolnieks, Ritchie Bartlett and Mike Fisher all won two of their singles with Martin Hynes (2/3) being the visitors most successful player. Their other points came from Bob Thompson and in the doubles.

In Division Two, Budehaven B extended their lead at the top with a 9-1 victory over a Paul Burden-less Altarnun.

Alex Whitfield grabbed the visitors’ solitary point with a four-set victory over David Sillifant while Owen Salisbury and Ashley Taylor both enjoyed perfect evenings, although Taylor needed deciders against Whitfield and Geoff Hale.

It was a good night for Budehaven as the C team beat Crackington B 7-3, although the match was far closer than it looks.

Anthony Ward continued his brilliant start to the season with another three wins while his brother Andrew also did well with two victories, one of which was the match of the season so far, as he beat Robin Evans 18-16 in the final set.

Evans, Keiron Chatterjea and James Ellis — who was standing in for Ross Paynter — all grabbed a solitary success for the visitors, as did Chris Mill for Budehaven.

Whitstone Wanderers look the most likely to catch Budehaven B as they thrashed Launceston 8-2.

Although they’re 22 points behind the leaders, they have two games in-hand, starting with a trip to Crackington B tonight.

Barry Stearman continued his 100% start to the season while skipper Doug Genini had a night to remember, winning all three out of his outings. Karen Horrell and Steve Parsons both beat Rob Woodhouse as Launceston continue to graft away in mid-table.

In the basement division, Bridgerule B grabbed their first victory of the season with a 3-2 victory over Budehaven D.

Jimmy Rickett was the man of the moment, as he got the better of both Cayden Gill and John Gillin, who both beat Nick Brewer. Brewer did get to taste victory as he and Rickett won the doubles in a decider to snatch victory.

There was a much more one-sided evening at North Hill as their C team lost 5-0 at home to Helland C.

Rob Summerfield and Tracey Oke were in fine form in both the singles and doubles as their excellent start continues.
