County Second Team Championships — Sunday, July 28

AFTER winning their earlier round in May against Devon, Cornwall hosted Somerset at Launceston in the semi-final of this knockout competition.

The Cornwall ladies’ second team (pictured below right with the opposition) is captained by Launceston’s Wendy Briggs and Cath Hopkins, also from Launceston, is one of the members of the team.

The three foursomes matches in the morning were narrowly won by the home team by two matches to one and in the afternoon singles matches the first three matches went to the visitors with Lauren Hulsten, Kira Barnes and Caroline Hume-Kendall all losing close games.

Wins for Cornwall’s Annie Lobb and Bev Vann left Hopkins on the course in the deciding match. She then holed the winning putt on the 18th green to take her team into the final later in the year.

Club secretary Alan Creber said: “Well done Cornwall! Thank you to all the locals who turned out to support the match.”

Home match v Perranporth — Friday, July 26

LAUNCESTON hosted Perranporth on a warm day, only occasionally dampened by a smattering of rain.

Launceston had suffered the indignity of a 6-0 whitewash when they visited the links course earlier this month. However, on their own course, with straight driving, and good local knowledge of the greens, Launceston were excellent, winning 4.5-1.5.

Club secretary Alan Creber said: “Perranporth were possibly inexperienced when playing on a course with more grass on the fairways, deeper grass in the rough, and something they never see on their own course-trees!”

Alan Tyler was ‘Star of the Day’ for Launceston, not only winning his match but also securing the bottle of wine for being nearest the pin on the 15th hole.
