WELSH rugby legend Gerald Davies and a handful of Newport Gwent Dragon players were at King Henry VIII school last week to help put over 200 year six primary school children through their paces.
The triple Grand Slam winner and the Dragons popped along to lend their support to the 'Capture the Magic' morning which formed part of the local primary school children's transition programme.
Supported by Mr R. Lewis, a large number of KHS year eight pupils delivered a range of sporting activities based around rugby.
Newport Gwent Dragon players came along to give their support and help out when needed and Gerald Davies, who was on hand to offer encouragement explained how impressed he was with the coaching ability of the year eight pupils and the teamwork skills of year six.
The Newport Gwent Dragon's players were also delighted with the primary pupils' rugby skills and the way they listened to the year eight coaches explanations.
Mr Lewis who helped organise the even, explained, "Year eight were a credit to the school. It is the first time we have used younger pupils for this coaching role and they have exceeded our expectations."
Headteacher Mrs E Lewis visited the event and was very pleased with the way year six and year eight pupils were interacting. She added, "Transition activities can really help year six prepare for life at secondary school. From this morning year six who will be year seven in September now know a significant number of our older pupils and members of staff. I am sure this will instil a confidence in them and ensure they are excited for the start with us in September."
The event finished with the Newport Gwent Dragons and Gerald Davies presenting pupils with certificates and congratulating all on an excellent morning.
