YET another weekend with barely a ball kicked across the south west after heavy rain throughout the week — as well as the aftermath of the previous weekend’s waterlogged pitches — only one local fixture survived thanks to the use of a 3G surface.
In the East Cornwall Division One match between Bodmin Town and Holsworthy, hosts Bodmin decided to move the venue 26 miles away to the Salt Mill 3G pitch at Saltash, and, for them, the decision proved to be the right one.
Not only did they keep up their recent high-scoring form but they also moved up to third in the table after a game often played in driving rain.
Both teams observed a minute’s silence in memory of former East Cornwall Premier League president Dennis Champion, who died last Friday.
The visitors took the lead in the opening ten minutes through a great strike from just outside the penalty area by Ryan Lee.
But the game changed when Holsworthy had a man sent off. That loss gave Bodmin the impetus and they drew level through Dan Jennings.
Keeping up the pressure, Bodmin took the lead through Connor Dymond before Jennings added his second.
The North Devon Magpies didn’t give up and deservedly reduced the arrears just before half-time when Lee outstripped the Bodmin defence to produce a clinical finish.
The second half was just as lively as the ten-man Holsworthy outfit managed to level the scores with an early Dominic Abbot strike. But Bodmin got on top again, regaining the lead through Tom Trethewey. And with fewer than ten minutes remaining Jennings let fly to complete his hat-trick and put the game to bed.
