Cornwall Senior Cup — Third Round
Saltash United 2
Launceston 1
BILLED as a showdown between two evenly-matched sides from the Peninsula Premier and the game lived up to expectations with Saltash booking their place in the next round via a late Dave Trott penalty.
A scrappy opening half-hour on a heavy pitch finally sparked into life when Chris Wright pounced during a goalmouth scramble to fire the home side in front at the interval.
Launceston goalkeeper Ollie Chenoweth produced some fine saves early in the second period and the Clarets took full advantage with an equaliser from this week’s ‘Quick Fire Five’ entrant Liam Tilley.
The visitors were now in the ascendancy and new signing Danny Zallick was very unfortunate to see his delicate chip bounce clear off the post.
It was a game heading towards extra-time when Trott threaded a pass inside from the left flank for Sam Hughes, who was felled by Chenoweth for a spot-kick on 70 minutes.
Trott made no mistake from the penalty spot to settle what was a very tight encounter.
• ELSEWHERE in the third round, holders St Austell beat St Agnes 6-3 to progress, Helston beat Perranporth 7-0, Torpoint lost 4-1 at Godolphin Atlantic, Porthleven went out to Newquay 4-1, and Penryn went through after extra time against Wendron 3-1.
South West Peninsula Premier Division
Plymouth Parkway 2
Camelford 0
CAMELFORD put up a stubborn resistance for 70 minutes before finally succumbing to the Parkway pressure in a surprisingly even game at Bolitho Park.
The visitors are locked in a relegation battle, while Parkway still have aspirations of pushing for the top places, but, despite dominating possession, the home side were left frustrated in the first half.
Gradually, tiredness began to open gaps in the Camelford defence and Parkway finally made the breakthrough with a lofted pass from John Heveran releasing Ryan Richards to score with a composed strike.
Reuben Kane was enjoying a fine game for Parkway and his team sealed the three points in injury-time with a carbon copy goal, as a Heveran clearance again fell to Richards for a side-foot finish.
East Cornwall Division One
Bude Town 3
Camelford 2
BUDE inched themselves clear of the danger zone against a Camelford outfit, who find themselves rooted to the bottom of the table with just one win from their first ten games.
On a difficult surface both sides tried their best to play good football, which resulted in a highly entertaining match.
Bude led 1-0 at half-time thanks to a terrific Gary Hodgson free-kick and they doubled their advantage after the break when Nathan Mitchel cut inside and from 20 yards he let fly into the top corner.
Camelford struck back well and, following a powerful run, Sam Stockdale slammed in a great shot.
Bude responded well with Pete Davenport chipping a great goal from the edge of the penalty area into the far corner of the net.
The Camels would not give in though and, after a Stockdale goal had been disallowed, Ben Jarram scored direct from a corner to keep the game alive.
Wadebridge Town 3
Holsworthy 1
THIS was a welcome three points for Wadebridge, who ended a four-game winless run against a Holsworthy outfit, who took their losing streak to four games.
The visitors started well and took a 20th minute lead when the home goalkeeper spilled the ball to the on-rushing striker.
Wadebridge struck back when a Johnny May cross was controlled by Stuart Parkyn, who eventually headed home.
The hosts took the lead through a Gwen Robertson header following a cross from Rob Centini, and the victory was secured when Ross McClachlin reacted quickly to a loose ball in a goalmouth scramble to ensure all three points were staying with the home side.
