THE second round of this year’s South West Peninsula League Walter C Parsona League Cup takes place this weekend, starting with tonight’s Friday night North Cornwall derby between Camelford and Launceston (7.30pm).
The Camels are looking to bounce back from last weekend’s FA Vase defeat to Clevedon Town, while the Clarets – still without a manager following Simon Minett’s resignation last week – will look to build on their encouraging 2-2 draw at Falmouth Town Reserves last Saturday thanks to Dylan Rangecroft’s brace.
The rest of the ties are scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, which includes holders Penzance making the long trip to South Devon to take on Newton Abbot Spurs. The Magpies saw off Callington Town at Wadebridge Town in May to retain their trophy, and are looking for a remarkable three-peat.
Of the rest of the Premier West sides, Holsworthy have the hardest assignment possible as they head to East Devon to tackle Premier East pacesetters Cullompton Rangers who have won 10 of their 11 league games and are yet to lose.
There are plenty of other West versus East ties.
Two sides at the top end of their respective divisions meet at Callington as the Pastymen host Bridport, while Dobwalls and Mousehole – both struggling at the wrong end of Premier West – enjoy home comforts when they tackle Stoke Gabriel and Torbay Police and Torridgeside respectively.
Sticker, one of the success stories of the Premier West campaign so far, host Crediton Unied, while St Mawgan’s excellent run of form sees them arguably start as favourites when they tackle out of form Torrington from North Devon at Trevarrian.
There are three all Cornish ties as clubs look to reach the last 16 as Bude Town welcome Helston Athletic’s youngsters to Broadclose Park.
The young Blues travel having won 3-1 at Wendron United on Wednesday night courtesy of goals from Henry Chappell, Josh Daniel and Hugo Massey, while the Seasiders are also confident having won 3-2 at Hayle last Saturday.
There is also a local derby at Bickland Park as two sides enjoying solid campaigns – Falmouth Town Reserves and Hayle – face off, while Premier West leaders AFC St Austell host Paul Rowe’s Wadebridge Town.
The draw for the last 32 is as follows (Saturday, 3pm unless stated): Bishops Lydeard v Axminster Town, Bude Town v Helston Athletic, Callington Town v Bridport, Camelford v Launceston (Friday, 7.30pm), Cullompton Rangers v Holsworthy, Dobwalls v Stoke Grbriel and Torbay Police, Falmouth Town Res v Hayle, Honiton Town v Ilfracombe Town, Ilminster Town v University of Exeter, Mousehole v Torridgeside, Newton Abbo Spurs v Penzance, Okehampton Argyle v Middlezoy Rovers, St Austell v Wadebridge Town, St Mawgan v Torrington, Sticker v Crediton United, Teignmouth v Elburton Villa.
