CAMELFORD made it a Christmas to remember by hammering lowly St Blazey 5-2 on New Year’s Eve.
On Boxing Day the Camels enjoyed one of their greatest victories in recent years as Mark Gusterson’s double earned them a 2-1 victory over reigning champions Bodmin Town at Trefrew Park.
Last Friday night, Reg Hambly’s men made the short journey to St Blazey and romped into a 5-0 lead against the beleaguered hosts who’ve now picked up just four points from 23 games and sit bottom of the table.
And although the home side did grab two late consolations, the Camels headed back to North Cornwall in a great mood ahead of Saturday’s home clash with mid-table Cullompton Rangers.
The Camels started off the better team at Blaise Park but it was the home side with the first chance of the game from midfielder Ryan Howe, which was comfortably saved by Josh Grills.
Camelford now woke up and had their first chance when Ed Harrison played a quick one-two with Bobby Hopkinson and the shot was volleyed just wide. The first goal finally came when rapid winger Josh Penrose brought a foul out of left-back Josh Sims and the ball in from Hopkinson was perfect for defender Adam Jenkin to nod in.
It was now St Blazey who knew they had to reply and were close to doing so when Jak Griffiths’ free kick rebounded out to Howe who’s effort was narrowly deflected past the post.
All of Camelford’s nerves were soon forgotten when they got a second and it all started at the back when Martin Haynes carved out a ball to Penrose who beat Sims and played it through to Hopkinson in the box for a simple finish.
This game had flipped immediately on its head as moments later Hopkinson was at it again with a 30-yard wonder strike into the top right-hand corner with keeper Dave Painter motionless.
Minutes after the restart Camelford made it four with Ed Harrison beating three players in his path before poking past the onrushing Painter.
The fifth came moments later when substitute Joe Adkins cleverly finished from a Charlie Hambly through ball.
Late into the half and St Blazey got their first consolation goal through Sims who hit a cracker of a shot into the top corner from the left hand side.
St Blazey finished off the scoring with one last goal and it came from a through ball from Dan Bennett to substitute Lucas Jackson to slot past Grills.
But it was too little too late from St Blazey as Camelford rounded off 2016 in style with the Camelford chairman, Ollie Rowe, adding: “After beating Bodmin and to come down to St Blazey away from home and score five goals is brilliant.”
