SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE PREMIER WEST (SATURDAY)

Falmouth Town Reserves 1 Holsworthy 1

HOLSWORTHY boss Kevin Squire admitted he was ‘disappointed with how we played compared to previous weeks’ following their 1-1 draw at newly-promoted Falmouth Town Reserves on Saturday.

The Magpies made the long trip down to Bickland park off the back of eight points from their opening four matches which included a goalless draw at much-fancied Elburton Villa I in midweek – but never really played to their potential, not helped by conceding inside a minute.

However, they did improve as it went on and got an equaliser through in-form striker Ben Sharpe 15 minutes from time.

Squire told the post: “For me, I was disappointed with how we played compared to previous weeks.

“Our standards have been set quite high after the first few games and to start as slow as we did was a surprise.

“We struggled to adapt to the big, bobbly pitch on the day, but the players have been great in these early weeks, so I don’t want to be too critical at this stage.

“We had a chat afterwards and I think we all know this game was below what we can produce and I’m looking forward to the next game already so we can put that right.”

Squire made three changes from the Elburton game.

Sam Hill was back from holiday and joined Callum Martyn and Jedd peschke in defence, while Josh Down was handed his first start in the midfield alongside Aiden Slade who returned from illness. Jay Thomas was away while Tallan Burns was playing cricket.

Holsworthy to Falmouth is a near two-hour journey and within 60 seconds of kick-off they were behind as after running through the midfield, a loose ball in the box found the bottom corner.

Both teams struggled from there on, the closest Holsworthy got to scoring before the break was when Sharpe hit the side-netting.

The second half continued in a similar pattern before Squire changed to three up front including bringing on strikers Joe Barker and Chris Wildern as well as left-sided player Kieran Jollow.

That seemed to get the Magpies into gear and they levelled 15 minutes from time. Gavin Carter’s ball over the left-back was seized by Wildern and as the keeper came out, his cross-cum-shot was swept in by Sharpe.

Holsworthy enjoyed their best spell of the game as Barker saw two good chances saved, while Jollow was denied from 20 yards.

Falmouth had a couple of half-hearted appeals for a penalty waved away, but in the end both teams had to settle for a point.

Squire concluded: “A draw was a fair result in my opinion and I’d like to say the officials had a good game and did their jobs well on the day.

“For us, Callum Martyn was outstanding at the back all game and has started the season really, really well.

“Credit to all three subs who came on and gave us freshness and helped us get back into the game, and on another day we would have finished the chances we had.”
