Saturday, February 17

AT?LONG?last?there was almost a full programme of local football last Saturday.

After weeks of dreadful weather, just a dozen or so games fell victim to the elements including Bude Town’s trip to St Blazey and Holsworthy’s home game against league leaders Ludgvan in Division? One (West) of the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League.

However, both Camelford and Launceston finally got to play home fixtures for the first time this year, even though both sides fell to defeat to Tavistock and St Austell respectively.

The East Cornwall League programme wasn’t too badly affected while just two of the scheduled games in the JJ?Jones and Sons Duchy League failed pitch inspections.

The game between St Kew and Week St Mary was switched to St Kew to ensure a game was played.

CAMELFORD’s first game at Trefrew Park since December 9 ended in defeat to last year’s champions.

The Camels were competitive for long spells against their impressive visitors but were undone by goals in each half from Reece Shanley and forward Liam Prynn, who has recently joined from Launceston.

The defeat leaves Camelford in a fight with a number of teams for survival, but they’ll get the chance to move away from danger on Saturday when they welcome bottom side Witheridge (3pm).

FOOTBALL returned to Pennygillam on Saturday after an 11-week break due to the miserable winter weather.

The largest crowd of the season was present to witness an entertaining game on a rare spring-like afternoon, which the visitors ultimately won.

With goalkeeper Cory Harvey having moved to rivals Bodmin Town, Launceston boss Gary Jeffery handed a home debut to 18-year-old Tom Watson. Injured skipper Lee Rundle was still unable to start and with strikers Liam Prynn and Chris Wright having departed the club, for Tavistock and Plymstock respectively, it was an unfamiliar Clarets line-up.

Launceston started brightly and midfielder Callum Watson was unlucky not to open the scoring when his drive beat keeper Jason Chapman but came back off the post. The visitors took the lead on the half-hour, however, when full-back Martin Watts struck a firm free-kick beyond Watson and into the far corner.

The Clarets remained competitive and scored a deserved equaliser after 58 minutes when superb wing-play by Callum Thompson set up midfielder Ruben Kane whose accurate cross-shot eluded Chapman.

Unfortunately, for the home side they were unable to consolidate the lead and St Austell struck back immediately through the dangerous Mark Goldsworthy.

The Clarets were unlucky after 82 minutes when Kane again beat Chapman only for his shot to strike the far post, with Chris Head just unable to reach the rebound.

St Austell eventually clinched the points in the final minute, in strange circumstances. Young Clarets midfielder Reece Thomson thought he was tripped in midfield, However the referee thought otherwise, leaving St Austell debutant Ryan Oxley free to roll the ball past the unfortunate Watson, who had played well on debut.

This was a brave Clarets display against a side registering their tenth consecutive victory. Launceston will want to get their season back on track when they travel to Exmouth Town on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).
