North Devon Football League round-up – Saturday, October 4

MORWENSTOW secured a second league win of the season on Saturday by thrashing North Molton 6-1 at the Shop Playing Field.

The Greens had tasted victory just once in their opening five games and had conceded plenty of goals in the process as well as losing 8-3 at West Cornwall in the Cornwall Intermediate Cup.

They fell behind in the first half to a penalty, but once Jake Gilbert equalised, Michael Dolan put them in front.

Veteran Mark Skelton’s double gave them breathing space before Elijah Action and Cal Rogers added the icing on the cake.

Holsworthy Reserves weren’t in league action, however they had a day to forget in the Devon Premier Cup as they were thrashed 11-2 at their Sidmouth Town counterparts.

Scott Hughes helped himself to a remarkable double hat-trick with Frank Long adding a treble of his own and Khalid Aitidar and Harry Saunders also finding the back of the net.

In the Senior Division, Bradworthy made it seven wins from seven as they saw off visiting Kingsley Park 2-0.

The Horniwinks’ goalscorers were striker Tudor Placinta and Niall Slade.

Shebbear United made the long trip up to Georgeham and Croyde Rovers and were edged out 2-1.

The Tangerines also fell into the bottom three as a result as Braunton Seconds saw off Merton 1-0.

Curtis Johnson equalised for Shebbear midway through the second half after Ben Brace’s long-range piledriver hit the underside of the bar, but the hosts, who scored through Raith Whattingham and Ruben Seels, snuck a victory which saw them move up to eighth and ahead of their opponents on goal difference.

The two Post area sides in action in Intermediate One both secured draws away from home.

Putford led at the break through the in-form Tom Gleeson at Sandymere Blues, however they were pegged back in the second half courtesy of Samuel Corbett.

Morwenstow Reserves grabbed a last-minute leveller in a 3-3 thriller at Braunton Thirds.

The Greens struck first before finding themselves 2-1 and 3-2 down.

However, they showed their fighting spirit as goals from Archie Taylor and Toby Trewin (2) kept up their unbeaten start which has seen them put together six points from their first four outings.
