LAUNCESTON’S first team returned to Pennygillam for the first time this season, to take on near-neighbours Okehampton in their latest pre-season friendly on Saturday and ran out 1-0 winners.
Joint Clarets managers Neil Price and Simon Minett took the opportunity to run the rule over a few members of their fringe squad, although still able to field a strong defensive line including teenagers Alex Parnell and George Plumb.
Plumb was the home man-of-the-match while Jude Jago, back at the club following a spell with Helston Athletic, also featured.
The game soon settled into a predominantly midfield battle, with few clear chances.
For Launceston, Sam Tattersall, Jack Stephens and Tom Bullock all showed up well as both sides fought to gain a territorial edge. For the visitors, the well-travelled Saddam ‘Tornado’ Bello posed his customary physical threat, as did former Tavistock man Josh Robins.
The first half remained goalless with both managers making substitutions at the break.
On the hour, the Clarets were awarded a penalty by Premier League official Simon Long, for what appeared a minor pushing offence. Striker Kian Berry took responsibility but saw his spot-kick well saved.
However within three minutes Launceston had moved in front, for the first time this season. A right-wing corner was only half cleared, leaving new signing James McNary to stab home the loose ball.
Bullock fired a cross-shot just over as clear chances remained at a premium and a worthwhile, competitive affair ended with no further scoring.
This had been a far more valuable run-out for the Clarets than the previous week's sweltering affair at Bideford.
The Clarets were due to entertain Plymstock United at Pennygillam last night (Tuesday) before travelling to SWPL East side Stoke Gabriel and Torbay Police this Saturday, as preparations continue for their opening league game at Holsworthy on August 2.
