Cullompton Rangers 1
RYAN?POOLEY slotted home a second-half penalty to ensure the Camels made it nine points from a possible 12 to start their campaign as they ground out a 2-1 victory over Cullompton Rangers at Trefrew Park.
The visitors dominated for long spells as the depleted hosts tried to stay in the game, which they managed thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper Luke Gwillam.
Despite Jordan Harris eventually giving Cullompton a deserved lead, the Camels responded when Adam Sleep fired in following a corner.
Sleep’s making quite a name for himself as a striker since moving out of defence and he drew a foul from Adam Seedhouse-Evans inside the box with 20 minutes to go.
Pooley, who scored a hat-trick in their last home game against Godolphin, slotted home to make it an excellent start to the season for Reg Hambly’s men.
Launceston 5
Ivybridge Town 3
LAUNCESTON opened their account for the new season with a pulsating, slightly chaotic but hugely entertaining 5-3 victory over a persistent Ivybridge Town at Pennygillam on Saturday.
Four times the Clarets took a two-goal lead, only for the visitors to halve the deficit on three separate occasions, before the clock finally defeated them.
Rhys Walton put the Clarets in front after 21 minutes, before Jordan Walton doubled the advantage four minutes later with a thumping 15-yard drive.
Elliot Cunningham pulled one back before the break, driving firmly past Tom Watson who was deputising for the injured Josh Colwill.
Rhys Walton soon made it 3-1 to the Clarets after being cleverly set up by Sam Davey, but once again Ivybridge came roaring back.
After a lengthy delay for a shoulder injury sustained by Launceston midfielder Tallan Mitchell, Sam Marker made it 3-2 with a deflected drive past Watson, leaving the wrong-footed young keeper with no chance.
Launceston made it 4-2 in the 72nd minute with a superb effort. Full-back George Birkbeck played a neat one-two before cutting inside and driving firmly past the beleaguered Martin Piper.
The goals kept coming though, and in the 77th minute defensive hesitancy allowed Joe O’Loughlin to run clear and side-foot past Watson, making it 4-3 and setting up a tense finish.
However, deep into injury-time, Launceston substitute Declan Hathaway finally made the points safe with a sumptuous chip over Piper from just inside the penalty area.
Launceston’s league game at Bodmin on Wednesday was postponed due to the home side having an FA Cup replay at Cadbury Heath, meaning that the Clarets will have a week to prepare into Saturday’s big FA Vase tie at Elburton Villa (3pm).
This will be Launceston’s first game in the prestigious national competition for eight years, their qualification made possible by the recent extensive ground improvements at Pennygillam.
Division?One (West)
Bude Town 1
St Dennis 3
BUDE paid the penalty for a slow start and a sloppy first-half as they fell to a 3-1 defeat to St Dennis on Saturday at Broadclose Park.
The visitors began the game strongly and caused Bude several problems with some excellent movement up front. That sharpness paid dividends on 10 minutes when Carl Rickard swept home from 10 yards after some neat build play.
The home side continued to labour and found themselves two goals down after 42 minutes when an excellent save was made by the Seasiders keeper Gary Dinshaw only for Rickard to react quickest and slot home the rebound.
This sparked Bude into life; Josh Allen pulled a goal back from a corner in the 44th minute and hit the bar a minute later from a perfectly-flighted Hayden White cross.
The second-half saw Bude in the ascendancy as they pushed for an equaliser. That looked to have come with 15 minutes to go as Nathan Bonney was brought down in the box and a penalty was awarded.
However, Wes Pugh’s spot kick however was saved by Ryan Holland, and despite continued late pressure, which saw the ball cleared off the line and a flurry of chances missed, the equaliser never came.
With Bude pushing up, St Dennis settled the contest in the 88th minute with a breakaway goal by Jacob Rowe.
Holsworthy
Ludgvan (HW)
HOLSWORTHY were awarded the three points after the visitors failed to raise a side.
The summer has been tough for the West Cornwall club due to all but one of last season’s squad leaving while they have also had two managerial changes.
Magpies manager, Liam Dart, said:?““We were disappointed we didn’t get to play because you want to keep playing for momentum.
“After last season for Ludgvan, who came runners up in he league, it is a sad state of affairs to not be able to raise a side. Hopefully for them they can pull together players to field sides for the rest of the season.”
Holsworthy are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Dobwalls (3pm) and Dart expects a tough test.
He said: “Dobwalls is going to be a very difficult game. It is going to be a physical encounter and they will be direct, so it’s going to be a challenge for our young side.”
