Holsworthy earn point after end-to-end encounter against Penzance

HOLSWORTHY came from behind to earn a deserved draw against third placed Penzance at Upcott Field on Saturday.

Shortly after Magpies keeper Ryan Chadwick had made a brilliant spot kick-save in the middle of the first half, Ewan Trevains put the away side in front going into the break.

Holsworthy, who changed formation at half-time, got back on level terms in the 65th minute through Ben Sharpe to rescue a point for Kev Squire’s men.

The Magpies boss said: “It was a good competitive game from the start and it’s nice to have turned up against one of the better teams in the league. We played against a good team who have a group of players that are obviously coached well, but I think we stood up to the task.

“First half we set up with a three at the back and there movement was causing us some problems. We’ve still had a couple of great chances in the first half hour, probably should have done better with them, and then they’ve got a penalty which Ryan brilliantly saved so credit to him. Two minutes later, they’ve done us with a cross field pass and a little bit of movement in the middle and it was a good finish from Trevains.

“We’ve gone in at 1-0 a little bit disappointed but overall quite happy with how we competed, just needed to pass the ball better and make our movements better in the final third. We changed formation in the second half to try and combat their movement.

“We then created some half chances, put them under pressure, made them kick the ball out of play, fluff back passes, and then we got the goal with a great finish from Ben who worked tirelessly all game.

“The game was end-to-end. I take my hat off to Penzance, they are a good side but I think my team showed that they can compete with these top sides and I think the draw was fair.

“We’ve had to work as a team to get something out of the game. Individual performances might win you the game, but it’s team performances that get you points really and I think the whole squad put in a good performance.”

Holsworthy scorer Sharpe added: “It was a good game for us, I think we dealt with the pressure really well at the back. Ryan made a great save with the penalty which really set the game for us.

“Second half we knew we needed to do more. We needed to clear our lines better, get the ball up the pitch and try and make their back line work a bit harder.

“We came out with momentum and got the draw which was a good results for us.”

Holsworthy, who now sit fourth in the league table, will host sixth placed Callington Town in their next game this Saturday (3pm).

Elsewhere in the South West Peninsula League, Camelford secured a 2-0 victory over Falmouth Town Reserves at Trefrew Park at the weekend.

Joe Parr opened the scoring for the Camels before a Kyle Flew cross found Matt Andrew who helped seal the points for Bobby Hopkinson’s team.
